If you don't already have an XL300 engine, the CN9-D is a good buy. The XL300 is a very versatile engine that's used in many builds.

The Centurions are varied enough that it doesn't matter which you buy. Each of them are decent at something.

Look at the quirks then decide.

The -D has a crazy LB10X cooldown. If you like the shotgun you will love this mech.
(mind it goes with an XL engine, which hugely reduce a Centurion survivability, but owning an -AH I suppose you know that already).

The -AL is great at large pulses. 2 LPLas on he arm and 2 MLas on the torso make a very nice skirmisher, very durable thank to the STD engine.
(though I'm not sure how Wolverines can do better... or not)

Both are good mechs, you can't go wrong.

Agreed with the above sentiments... when I fell into this loop I finally opted to just get 'em all. :)

Let the quirks decide for you.

I have the AL, and it does quite well with two MPLs and two LPLs with a crapton of DHS (though its reasonable to drop the MPLs to MLs for the extra weight) and is my personal favourite of the three I have (other two are A and AH).

The D does fantastic with a stock-ish build, as that durability is usually a fair tradeoff for endless shotgun fire.

The YLW is generally considered one of the best hero mechs in the game, though with the AH, the only real difference is whether you prefer the enery in the CT or the missiles.

I didn't build my cent D with quirks in mind (did so months b4 they were added), but it was fun.

XL 330 -- Yes, bought just for the cent D
ac5 and 2 tons ammo
2 srm4 with 2 tons ammo
2 mlas

Centurion D

Ran real fast for a centurion :D

* Apologies, have to correct myself. Looking at my Cent D now (i removed weapons) i no longer remember what i fit inside besides my mlas

The AL was my favorite when I was mastering them. The energy quirks let you swing 2x LPLs and a bunch of MLs, which let you pretty well obliterate stuff.

The YLW is my favorite. 2mlas, ac20 w/ 3t ammo, case, std 250 engine, ff + endo.

I know people hate on case, but if my ST with the ammo goes, it takes the arm and let's me zombie on.

I don't think you need to run a Cent with anything more than a 250/255 engine really. I say 255 because the XL weighs the same as the 250.

Personally my favourite is the Wang. It's a fantastic "striker" mech, a role which doesn't seem to be used or at least mentioned. A cross between brawling and skirmishing. The AL is my 2nd favourite with a 3 large wub loadout (with slightly lower engine rating to fit it all in with enough heatsinks). I've never really got on well with the D because you need to stay focused on your target for longer to keep rattling off the shotgun for enough damage and as such doesn't suit the striker role I like to play with Cents.

So if you can buy with MC I would recommend the Wang, if it's cbills then the AL,

Here are my 2 builds.

With quirks, this thing fires an lbx 10 like an ac 2 if you also have the cooldown module. Its pretty fast, good support, and fun.

Std version if you prefer more servivability, but less speed.
