But I don't have the file, I can't find the thread I downloaded it from, and I didn't back up my registry. I knew better, too, I was just careless.
The fact is it made the game run worse.

Helping someone within their registry, if they do not know what they are doing in their registry, is a great way to help them really bork their registry. 
You should have kept the file (individual reg entries are tiny) and backed up your registry. I would normally suggest Ccleaner for tidying up the registry automatically.. but that will only take out stray entries (Mechwarrior would need to be uninstalled to orphan them. Perhaps someone can point you to the archived thread with the file and hopefully the file is still available.
