If you are finding your search times are long, just hit cancel. You'll find something right away.

I can attest that this totally works.

The searches have been inordinately long lately......but I've also noted a couple of drops that were near instantaneous but were nowhere near the 3/3/3/3 threshold that PGI allegedly implemented. One that comes to mind immediately was 5 assaults on one side vs 2 on the other. From search to drop in less than 10 seconds.........apparently that release valve was stuck open.
The last 3 times I've tried to cancel a search it's connected immediately after hitting the cancel button, is that what you're talking about?

I have also noticed that. Doesnt happen every time, but 2 out of 3 it does. If you are waiting for a couple of minutes and nothing happens, hit cancel and you will get connected.

It also prevents the mm safety valves from expanding elo brackets to an extreme

I was in a fight like that yesterday, group queue. Our side had 2 assaults, the other had 5 (3 warhawks, a stalker and a victor). Still won convincingly.

It seems like the group queue has a kinda weak attendance nowadays? But I'm not surprised. It happens that me and my friends just pug drop instead of group drop while talking about other things over voip. The group queue is a 'special' place for 2-3 mans, and you have to be in the right mood for it to be fun.

Don't quote me on this completely ( and help me out if you're around, Egomane), but I think it has to do with both the population and what their choices of mech or map type are.
I know the map and mech type will effect the time it takes you for getting into a match, that one's kind of obvious with the 3/3/3/3 filter and that whole "test" they did where the map type you selected is simply a vote, not a guarantee.
That one failed, by the way, because whiners weren't happy about having to do Conquest when they didn't choose it...regardless of the fact that the teams were a lot more evenly balanced skillwise.
The server population has a lot to do with it, too. I think the matchmaker is deisgned to look for a specific range of Elo then widens the search several times, if necessary, to get the sides filled. Sometimes, that spread can get kind of big and take a while to accomplish.
I can't verify this with anything but gut feeling, but it seems to me that the longer a match takes to put together, the bigger chance of a complete derp team. Clicking the cancel and retrying or riding it into a match is the best way to avoid this.

Yeah, really weird that. It's like the Matchmaker goes "Well, if you're going to be like that, you big baby... here you go! Happy now!?"

It does happen quite often and frankly should tell you there is something wrong with the queue system of the MM. It makes me wonder if you're not actually in a queue sometimes, more like you end up on a stack and the more players that join the stack after you, the lower down you end up in priority. Either way something is messed up with MM and I doubt anyone is surprised by that at this point.

It ALWAYS happens when we go to cancel because someone joined our TS.... Never fails.

This may sound obvious, but if you want faster search times, make sure you re-search immediately after you get out of a match. Matchmaking works in waves. There will be few people in the queue, then a match ends and suddenly a dozen or so people will hit search simultaneously as their match ends. Make sure you ride the wave to the next game or else you have to rebuild a queue population within you Elo range from scratch.
I started timing my search lengths just to see. My first match would almost always be 3-4 minutes. Then next few games would have 1-2 minute search times if I hit search immediately. Of course eventually I would miss the bus because the guy who started the queue was above or below my Elo threshhold and I would have another 4 minute queue. However overall it cuts my search times nicely.
