I can't seem to find a build that I feel plays well.
Does anyone have a spec that is effective?

The Gray Death has really weak hard points IMO. I'd theory craft some builds, but I don't think any of them would be particularly strong.
LLas Build (Poke build)
Champion Build (poptart build)
Brawler (SRM brawler)
Really Fast Brawler (SRM brawler)

I feel like 1xGR with 4.5 tons of ammo, 4xML, xl280+1DHS with near max armor would be pretty good. I've seen people run similar builds on Cataphracts.

I was thinking something like this, but don't actually have one. I went with the PB and MAN that was a good choice.

Possibly - but I tend to prefer my Shawks faster than that.
Maybe dropping the SRM for a bigger engine
Put the lasers in the other arm and you have a full shield side.

4xML, 2xSRM4, UAC5, 3xJets. http://mwo.smurfy-ne...6fbb5b19a634c79
I originally built it on the stock 275XL, but swapped to a 280XL once I had the c-bills worked up (the engines are identical tonnage, but you get a tiny bit more performance out of the 280).

I've been possibly considering picking this up to round out my drop deck as a 55 tonner. However, aside from the 30% c-bill bonus I can't find anything that makes it remarkably different from some of the other Shadowhawk builds, and they all mostly have the same quirks. With the exception of the missile-biased 2D2, it almost seems like there's really no valid reason to take one Shadowhawk variant over another.

the Grey Death is special in that it has comparably many energy hardpoints, all of them in the arms (even its (tiny) quirk is laser based.)
because of that, it also sports some extra hit points in the arms that the other variants don't have.
I've been using the GD in CW defense matches with an XL280, 4JJ, 2LL, 2ML and an AC/5 as my first drop, it's a decent long(ish) range deterrent mech with enough speed for some quick response action if necessary.

I have enjoyed the mech so-far. It definitely has a lot of potential, although the limited missile slots are kinda of a bummer.
I am currently running this. You could easily toss in a 280 XL, but I have a bunch of 275's laying around and want to save my pennies.
I am Grayson Death Carlyle and this is my favorite mech on Solaris VII.

The one thing the GD has in common with the 5M is 5 Jump Jets - why not use them? I know in the min/max mindset it's all firepower but I like a medium that jumps up and away from the dreaded Stormcrow - ironic the 'Crow doesn't fly.
Maybe the same thing I do on my 5M for close range - but you can still poke out a bit with the LBX.

Drop a half-ton of ammo for the Srms and LBX to run the XL280 if you need more speed.
It's better than it looks - just use that shield left side, and always hammer any part of the enemy that's stripped of armor with the LBX.

I had trouble to find the right build for this mech and tried dozens of different loadouts
Standard-engine with AC20 and 4xMLs (and SPLs too) was very good, but better fit for team drops where you can get proper support. Great brawler but not a c-bill maker that i wanted ..

(swap MLs for SPLs for better DPS)
I gave up on "hardpoints-full" builds that use 4xenergy + big.ballistic + SRMs + XL. Too frail in optimal short range, too low DPS at longer ranges.
But Grey Death can also use SHD-2D specific, all-on-left-side builds, so I settled for this sniper build:
GAUSS,2ERLL,1JJ,XL280
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...b9a9831d7c4d4d8
...very effective sniper and c-bill machine in both PUG and group matches
