The problem with many of the quirk choices for 'mechs is that they seem to be based on the 'mechs past glory. As in, if it was king of the hill two years ago before JJ nerf/PPC nerf/Heat scale/Gauss Charge, then it gets fewer and worse quirks now.

The Highlander, Shadowhawk, and 'mechs like the Stalker 3F are the poster children for this strange effect. Yes, once upon a time, back when Quad PPC/ 3xPPC and Gauss builds were the last word in loadouts, and jump sniping was a real, constant threat, these 'mechs dominated. Things happened, the game changed, and now these are some of the least useful 'mechs as far as "serious" or "competitive" play is concerned.

Highlanders have a tiny engine cap, and their jumpjets don't deserve the name - you're better off taking a Victor or a Banshee or even an Atlas. Shadowhawks (except for the 2K) are outclassed in any role you can think of by the Griffin, Wolverine, Centurion AH - even the Hunchbacks do what they do better. The greatness of the 'hawk was mostly due to jumpsniping with the PPC/AC5 combo, which is far less effective now. And the final example, the Stalker 3F. This used to be the best of the Stalkers before quirks, because it gets a little extra torso twist radius. It was deadly because you could have 4 PPCs firing at the same time from above the level of the cockpit. Heat scale and PPC nerf killed that meta wayyyyy back when, and nowadays you are far more likely to see either the 4N, which got great large laser quirks, or the 5M, which got good SRM quirks. And yet, the 3F is being treated like an almost top tier Assault mech, with just two stingy general quirks. What gives?

Gotta keep people buying mechs. If they roundtable the meta then people spend cash on MC to get mechbays, then MC to just buy the mech due to impatience, and lastly Prem time for kitting them out faster.

It's strange. The highlander is so little used I forget it's even in the game. When looking at the mech store I don't even consider them and barely even notice them. I see them in game and I just shake my head. I see a thread like this and I go 'Oh yeah. those are actually in this game' except its not a gleeful revelation. It's more of a meh moment.

For something that dominated the Meta back in Beta it has fallen from grace pretty hard.

It's literally slower than most common Atlas builds, not maneuverable, only one of them can carry an AC/20, and they have barn-side-like hitboxes. Oh, and you can waste 8 tons on jumpjets which will let you jump over a light mech, but only if its dead, cause it takes 5 minutes. I remember when people were crapping themselves cause of "Death From Above", but even with some hypothetical collision system I only see that happening by accident. So why does it get less quirks than a Banshee, which is arguably one of the best IS assaults right now?

Heavy Metal could use better JJ, but otherwise I still make it work, especially with the 3 LL non ghost heat. ! B)

Futzing is the more appropriate word, but I'm amused at the choice of words.

I'll have to look into building something decent for it post-quirks... even though I know the quirks are ineffective enough as is while the JJ nerf (Hoverjets™) are the primarily reason for its failing.
