Are there any programs out there for mentoring new pilots? I noticed the Comstar teamspeak in the stickied thread, but the tutoring channels seem to be fairly empty.

Looking to try and meet some people and play a few rounds as a group, and maybe learn a thing or two.

From what I have seen, many of the more formal groups have some sort of 'basic training' for new members. It would seem joining one of them would be the best way to learn. (next best would be a close examination of the many very good guides here in the forums.)

Unsure of how to go about locating a suitable group, as I play exclusively PUG for the time being.

Edit your name in TS to state that you are a "new player looking for help" and drop into Looking for Group lobby.

The Dark Born is a unit that has a mentoring program that helps introduce new pilots to the early concepts needed for both MWO and as a way of preparing a pilot for more team orientated game play.

This however like other player units that offer these opportunities is an intentional program provided for pilots wishing to become members of the unit.

At the same time the Dark Born have developed specific web tools Codex and RIG to help people with Mech build techniques for various roles aswell as the use of piloting statistics so that they can compare their own applied data with some privacy to allow them to be aware of their own piloting styles and where they can identify areas for improvement.

Being new player freindly and specifically having tools and programs to support new players aswell as veterans alike is one of the inclusive choice led policies of the unit.

Who says that nefarious dezgra Clan Dark Caste couldn't be helpful? ;)

In other words - there is no formal in game mechanic for it - but the players have stepped up to the plate.

If you want, PM me with a specific time that you can log in, and I'll try to be online for that, to help you out.

Most Merc Units have training that they offer their more inexperienced members. Joining such a group it probably your best bet.

That being said, PGI is currently collecting player ideas and feedback to help them develop a Mentorship System after they release Community Warfare, so something is in the pipeline! It's just a ways off...

PM me if you are interested in running drops with a seasoned pilot. I should be in-game this weekend after I get through some of my Finals. I don't mind showing you the ropes and am willing to introduce you to some other pilots who may be able to help as well. :)

Cool! Just some suggestions on the hunchies:

4sp should be a strong brawler. Generally they all should be but 4sp can load more speed and more brawling type builds.

4P is a beast in a cooler map, as it can take a beating. ALWAYS SHIELD THAT HUNCH!!! Use you hunch's lasers as your main punch and hit your side lasers for arm movement and whatnot.

GI might be better when gauss is in, but the UACs are simply not good from my eyes. Regardless, going with a UAC build will make you a huge glass cannon, but it's worth an attempt.

Remember that mechs marked with (C) give a 30% Champion XP bonus, and mechs with unique names (i.e. Death's Knell, Grid Iron, Boar's Head) are heroes and give a 30% C-bill bonus. This will help with the grind!

I also will say that getting the 4G and 4J is so so so worth, as the 4G is a powerful powerful brawler and the 4J can leave it's hunch alone without missiles, and with them, can wreck face too. The 4H is decent but needs more buffs tbh as that mech's AC10 doesn't quite do the same as 4G's AC20. Give them all a try though and good luck! Maybe you'd like the 4H or GI more than I did! And neat selection, I went the same as a starter. :)

Edit: super duper important: smurfy go play with builds here! http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab

Also: trial mech guide in case you choose to go play more than the hunchie. The 4P(C) would be extremely useful for you, and it can double grind down if needed. Recommending switching to Partyback mode as 4P(C) has the build already (trial). http://mwomercs.com/...65#entry3921165

Hunchbacks are awesome.

Some Hunchback action; might help ya.
4G chase cam (from Lordred's perspective following my red Hunch. 7 kills, 3 assists 711 damage.)
4G played like a Clan mech
4P slow build (with build info, painting, lots of third and first person perspective play. 3 kills, 7 assists, 400 damage.).
Split Screen Hunchback play (early 2013; 4 man play with two player vertical split screen of a 4P [left] and 4SP [right]).

I'll throw an add your way and if you see me on, feel free to drop me a message and I'll pick you up and bring you on the Zhizhu teamspeak.

Oh -- and welcome! (Sorry just got home from work an hour ago, so yeah. Tired. 10 hour shifts get old after a few weeks.)

I've actually found a very decent build for it which uses most of the available hardpoints, and is unique to the Grid Iron.
Here it is, it has an AC/20 with 2.5 tons of ammo, an SRM2 with 0.5 tons of ammo, 3 medium pulse lasers and a standard 200 engine with 2 double heat sinks. Armor values are smurfy default minus a bit of leg armor, they are not indicative of my own armor distribution.
It has a lot ( for a medium ) of fairly accurate close range firepower, approximating the pinpoint damage output of an AC/40 Jagermech at much lower cost, however since it uses a 200 engine it's as slow as any stock Hunchback.
The SRM launcher increases the size of the left torso which helps shield the AC/20 and it is remarkably easy to spread damage with this build.

Your proposed PC isn't going to have any problem running MWO Fen... I do very well on a much less able laptop.

I'll echo what others have said about just playing out your cadet bonus and enjoying the trial mechs. You'll rack up the cbills, bank XP against chassis you may later decide to own and definitely get a feel for the specific weights and chassis your abilities and preferences mesh well with.

Ransom's Corsairs are happy to invite you to group with us (fair warning that group Q is not an easy slog) and we've got experts in each weight class and for most specific chassis as well. Our lights and assaults pilots (the 2 most difficult classes to run well) are insanely good - as well as just insane.

When trying the different chassis, try to pay attention to the feel and flow of the mechs you're in. I'm a major medium lover - they're nearly all i pilot and i do very well in them. However, I had particular difficulty with both the Centurion and Kintaro mechs, mostly due to their high speed, but wide turning radius and their wide spread arms. I prefer my mechs a bit more compact (arms tight to the side) and able to turn like a dirt bike... not a Harley cruiser.

Different strokes for different folks. I'm sure you'll have figured out most of your preferences before long.

See you on the battlefield.

Yeah its been rough, but learning a lot facing more experienced pilots. I did a few solo matches and my opponents where much easier, I'm assuming its putting me in lower brackets.
