hey!

i enjoy playing as a second line fire support, as I'm neither drawn to assaults nor talented for brawling

I currently play either the Cat K2 or the MDD Prime as Fire support...and get mixed results on both of them in terms of their efficiency...sometimes being mere cannon fodder, other times being super awesome

I choose the loadout based on looks and feel, not pure efficiency, why my builds look this way:
MDD-PRIME
my play style is to be very selective on when to fire my lrms, most times only firing a single lrm 20, and only unleashing lrm40s if i'm sure they'll hit - which helps not running dry
the erll help fpr exchaning direct fire
the med pulses are for close quarter defense

CPLT-K2
the erppcs are in this build mostly for the longer barrels - even though the K2 lacks its former glory :/
sometimes it works out very well to perform as long range fire support - very depending on the map and situation though!
the large pulse lasers paired with the machine guns perform extremely well in medium to close range fights - i'd say they outperform the vulture's direct fire loadout
though the K2 has far greater survivability issues than the vulture, due to the vulnerability of an IS XL engine

leaving out on the discussion on what i could improve on the builds (boating lasers, boating missiles, boating in general), which one of those two mechs/loadouts would you consider the better fire support mech/loadout?

thanks for your advice!

Uhhhh HELLO my Jagermech would like to have a word with you!

Honestly though both your builds seem incredibly hot and generally too diverse. In this game you are rewarded mostly for specialization, it's not effective to have a bunch of different weapon systems that work at different ranges and have different projectile speeds etc. I know that you said you wanted to avoid such discussion but really it's the heart of MWO, you need to specialize mostly to get better results.

I can't really comment specifically on those two mechs as I don't use either, but I think that:

1) In the case of the Mad Dog, drop to LRM15 and try to bring more weaponry/heatsinks, and bring more specialized energy weaponry (e.g. 4 ERML), also your LRM ammo count is REALLY low for LRM40, bring at least 700 rounds for that amount of LRM tubes.

2) In the case of the K2, just diversify less in general, your heat efficiency is too low and your weaponry is too diverse. ERPPC for example is designed to be useful at short range as well as long, but you brought 2 extremely hot and heavy laser weapons to use at short range, so why not go for standard PPCs instead? Alternatively dump the PPCs in favour of 2ERLL + 2LPL, 45% HE, good at all ranges, ERLL can be used to alpha medium range with your LPL without having to lead the target.

Overall, your builds seem to be more tabletop-oriented than built for MWO.

Possible alternative builds:

K2 with reliable and almost heat-neutral ballistics, good HE

K2 ranged supremacy

K2 versatile ranged/medium

K2 medium range fire suppression + optional brawling power

MDD versatile medium range support + LRM (lacks TAG though)

MDD heavy LRM with lasers for medium range support

Well a K2 and Mad Dog are different animals really. Think of the Mad Dog as a MLRS unit, and the K2 as self propelled artillery.

They both do a similar job, but differently. The real question is, do you want direct or indirect fire support?

Also due to the hit boxes the ST's on the Mad Dog are damage magnets.
