The default game options are in need of adjustment (not that you have any sway over it). Defaulting to TPV, disgraceful. Global chat starting off, anti-social. Armlock and throttle, whai? I can not help but think if VOIP was added to the client, it would default everyone to muted.
I do not wish to be a naysayer but, I open my maw and poors forth the sounds of "Nay nay nay?".

If you press T, Y or U... the "chat" will remain until you press enter. This gives you a chance to read what was said.
You can't backtrack it, though, and having the chat open means you can't change course (turn), adjust speed and I think you can't fire with it open either.

Depends on what buttons you are using to fire.
Keyboard (semi-obviously) no
Mouse yes, as I popped it open once, and did not notice until I went to turn
(was charging in a Stalker - so no leg turning for a fair bit)

You can circumvent that when you use the 100% speed 80% speed etc buttons. Default should be the num pad if I am not mistaken.

I have no other buttons mapped around the chat buttons to avoid an accidental chat session mid-combat...
Actually, I have a separate keyboard for playing and one for typing during the game...

or you could disable throttle decay in the game options, that way holding down W increases your speed, holding down S reduces your speed, or if stopped puts you into reverse then acts as reverse accelerate, you would maintain speed when typing but would not be able to turn the legs

With the 100% speed key on th num pad it is bearable.

Double tapping ESC also works? Now that's something 'I' didn't know.

Perhaps it's to make it a bit easier on people new to the game? Possibly new to gaming period?
Think it through. If your first thought is "This needs to change" and you immediately open the settings etc, then you know what you want and how to get it.
If you are new to the game, or this type of FPS, then having weapons fire from diff locations might throw you off. Having arms separate from torso, ditto. Many people come from MMOs and thus 3rd person trailing camera is "normal" for them
Or in other words, it's not all about you and your preferences.
As to VOIP, if it didn't come muted, it would be as soon as I logged in.
**Edit** Correction, I would mute only if the option to completely disable it didn't exist.

I don't think there is an option to not have the text fade. Which is what I assume you're talking about.
You can quick flash double escape to pause and unpause to get the text to reload screen if I remember right, but there's no perma chat window.

Im going to have to respectfully disagree. I think the default options were bad and continue to believe so.
