I've had this happen several times, not just with UAVs but cherry red CT's on very large, very close 'mechs moving STRAIGHT at me (no lateral movement).
I got lucky to observe it happening to a member of my unit, prior to me switching to him, he'd hit it at least once, then I viewed his SECOND hit, and it looks like an actual hit, and finally, after THREE hits, the UAV comes down.

I know shooting at the exhaust jets of a UAV don't work... you have to aim slightly above it. I've had a helluva time shooting those down sometimes.
As for hit reg... you'd have to be more specific on the type of Mechs you were targeting... some Clan Mechs have broken*** hitboxes, Ryoken/Stormcrow... Hellbringer, Mad Dog, etc. PING and FPS also play a part in the hitreg issues folks are having too.

I've been told that UAV's "bob" making them pretty hard to shoot down with ballistics. If I'm not using Lasers (Large, preferably), I won't bother trying to shoot them down and will warn the team instead so one of them can shoot it.

I had a UAV locked on with a streak boating jenner and the missiles would hit it but do no damage

UAV hiver up and down,a nd so they are soemtimes indeed tricky to hit, but the red ct disappearing shots are indeed annoying.

Indeed, the UAV is hovering up and down slightly : that's why you have trouble shooting at it.

Did you guys watch the video before replying? They didn't say they were "having trouble hitting it" nor were they asking why is it so "tricky" to shoot UAV's down. Reading comprehension may take you far in life.
The OP is talking about the video where you can see visual feedback being given that the AC20 shell is impacting the UAV and that it took 3 shots from an AC20 to knock it out.
The video shows animation indicating they hit it. In the posted video, the animation presented to the players view is one indicating a hit on the UAV. AC20 shells only create an explosion on impact, they do not self detonate if you miss.
According to what I can find online about them, UAVs only take 10 points of damage. So how did the one in this video take 60 points before it dropped?
This appears to be a hit reg issue, where what is actually happening on the server is not being displayed properly to the user. That, or a MASSIVE buff to UAV health.

Ahhhh, my favorite topic ... hitreg, or better it´s partial non-existence (funnily some people seem to hit nigh on every time with quite uncanny accuracy, but that´s a completely other topic for another campfire session) .
Gentlemen, please go ahead and try to put up some pressure, for this is a "long-standing, permanently denied and swept under all rugs of the world"-issue which gains massive significance with the impending onset of WINTER .... er CW .
Oh...inb4 go tell your ISP ... already told em ... 14 times in the last 6 months (thanks Mr. Technician @ Liwest Tech support, you da man !!!! ) with one route-change that brought me exactly ... , YESSS, you guessed it !!!
ZERO improvement
Hopefully PGI get´s their collective power behind this bothersome issue and manages to defuse it for all of us, since :
No advantage, for nobody, let us ALL have a LEVEL field to measure ourselves in battles without this annoyance .
Thanks in advance for your time, keep up the pressure on this one .

So I killed a UAV with 2 AC5 shells hitting it (fired together) lastnight running my Jager... no UAV hitreg issues on my end.
