Garage Tips - Aka - You've Got To Be Kidding Me...

Played the game since late May 2013. Loads of fun. BUT - when you buy a mech and maybe you want to change out the engine. If you pull the engine off, it doesn't get lost forever in space - it goes into you're garage. Nothing would tell you this aside from the little #1 next to the engine in the garage, but you just spent a week or so saving up for it. And bells and whistles are going off saying - you're mech doesn't have an engine. So you push cancel - whew it's not lost in space and you sell it... and lose half the value because you're too scared of losing everything. Then you start to hate the garage. That was me for SIX months. I know - I'm a door knob. I just used smurfy and was content.
I've read just about everything on this new page and didn't figure it out. Until last night, I was reading a thread called "my favorite engine". Huh? Fav, gun, maybe... PPC vs LL. They start saying how these four are the only engines you need. Swap out this - change that. Wha?! I about fell out of my chair. The garage even saved the ammo I could never sell back!
DOUBLE RAINBOW ALL THE WAY!! Seriously, this was my reaction. (tear)
Do you know how many modules I've bought and sold?!
Maybe the fabled 2.0 garage interface will make this all better, IDK.
Still love the game - only FPS where you can design your rig. World of Tanks is cool n all, but this is amazing - even with all the things that aren't perfect, it's pretty darn cool. Just sunk $15 more MCs for mech bays. Keep up the good work PGI.

Hopefully the UI2.0 will help avoid making those misstakes. Been there bro

Here is to hoping they are adopting the "Smurphy" mech lab building scheme into UI2.0. Its so intuitive and simple!
One of my personal mechlab rules is to NEVER sell anything (Single Heat Sinks always get sold.. but SHS are ..

"Nothing you pull off your mech is ever gone."
That would make mix and matching weapons a joy not a pain in the arse! I have two buddies who quit simply b/c it took long to out fit a mech - 2 mill for scope? NO!! just take swap it out.

For future reference, there is also a 'one-time reset' for every account, for if you sell a Hero mech or otherwise make a mistake like that. Email support@mwomercs.com and see what they can do. I think selling a Hero or something would be just about the only thing I'd try for a reset with, and I don't even own one.

Why would you need to sell "most" equipment and weapons? I get that you have the 4 mechbays, but I would keep at least 5-6 of equip like BAPs etc, since if you get more mechbays down the road, why waste money re-buying something? No, you don't need 32 MLs, or 124 SHS but as a rule I sell very little. Unless it's a uber useful one, I usually only keep 2 engines of a given type in the garage, not counting any that are "deployed" just in case I need one. Now FTR, I haven't bought any spare mechbays, just have the extras from the PP and Sarah's mech.
Point being, for new players, you don't get full price back for anything you sell, so if you have to buy it back later, that's money wasted....

They have already said that they won't. As nice as it is for people who know what they are doing, its un-intuitive, does not convey necessary information to new players, and from a game design UI standpoint its actually fairly bad.
But the point behind it is good, and having a top down view of the mech is part of the feedback from the UI 2.0 public testing that they have said they are going to be rolling into UI 2.0 eventually per- player feedback, but its coming at a later time.
Don't expect Smurfy though. I know many have gotten used to that system, but from a game design perspective, its fairly bad.

I had an XL285 in a TBT that I just dropped into my ballistic spider and violla! I'm running at 166.
I've brought this topic up during the "ready" screen before matches and people said "Didn't you know that from Mech Warrior 1-4?" Um, no. Never played those.
I told a buddy about the game and he asked to see the manual and use the tutorial. There is a tutorial for movement. I hope to see a few more - AT LEAST one on the mech bay - HOW TO SWAP OUT AN ENGINE. From there I think the topics should be how to missle boat effectively, snipe, brawl, scout, NARC/tag as a light, and ecm (terribly confusing).

yes, things like movement tutorial is good, it is pretty hard for people to practice that by looking at pictures. But mechlab, eh, if there is a solid explaination of functions with pictures( circles drawn on them, arrows, whatever) and then MORE pges, for like heat managment, etc, it would go a long way.
I cant see it taking a ton of effort or time to make pictures on webspace on the websight. An online manual would go a long freegin way for new people I think. At leas tthe ones that arent afraid of you know, reading a page or two. Heck., if they wanted to go all out they could have inbedded videos on the manual pages for things with narration.
Actually, why isnt this done yet? It really seems like a no brainer.
Heck, PGI, throw Koniving like 5000 MC, he will probably make all the videos for you

In the same amount of time a temporary job could've netted you way more assets in real life and then you could just buy pretty much 100$ worth of mechs and bays and everything without spending hours to grind, and also have a few 1000$ left in your pocket from the job.
Time well spent, though. ...

Much like the time you've been spending on the forums trolling as you go. The whole point of this game is to play, leveling/upgrading mechs is a side effect of playing.!

Your right though playing this game is a waste of time.

Ah, but that wouldn't be nearly as much fun. Have you ever given everything - put your heart and soul - balls to the wall - leave it all on the field? I coach three soccer teams - middle school and under. Part of what makes soccer amazing is because sucky athletes over a couple season can really get better and contribute to a team if they WORK at it. Part of what makes this game wonderful is because you can work at it! (A part time job? I'd be curious to see hour many hours some of the better players put in. Didn't have some study about productivity lost with fantasy football?)
You can't buy accomplishment - you can pay some dude to train you, but Mech pilot training is a different thread

In just the right amount of time - not too much so that you hate the game - you can buy weapons, engines, DHS, etc. that make each mech better - WAY better than the stock. The mech bay is why I love this game. If I had to play the stock - meh. But if I can find a way - for me - to make the pieces fit together.... see video in first post.
THEN tell me I can swap engines - I fell out of my chair.

I would argue that it is not bad, but it is not pretty. Yeah we can click a button in the mech lab and see the entire build.
But that is the view I want when I'm editing my mech.
I don't want to have to cycle through tabs and sub tabs to access the different hard points. I want to see the whole damn thing. How else am I going to know what I want to do WITHOUT Alt-Tabbing between game and Smurfy? How else am I supposed to see where that extra couple tons are that I didn't math for accordingly?
After seeing Garage UI 2.0, I really miss Garage UI 1.0.

OP, I'm very glad you found that you can keep your engines.
