I went to the "faction" tab, was presented with no options, no planets have contracts available..... Where do I sign the contract??

Are you flying solo or are you part of a unit?

If you are in a unit, only the unit commander or someone who was given the contract selection permission can choose the contract.

Yes, I am part of a unit, rarely play at the same time as any of them or with them though. So if I quit the unit I would be able to choose my faction and play solo?

Be advised since CW Beta just dropped yesterday alot of units and players are still very unaware of it and will take time to adjust and figure the UI out. It did not come with a manual so some people will take longer to figure it out then others.

yes and no you have to cancel the contract you curently have, that cost 200.000 c bill and then you can leave the units but you will have a 2 days wait periode before you can chose your own faction but you can play solo in that faction for 2 days.
