We took a defense contract for two seperate FRR planets that where under attack. But it seems that the matchmaker wasn´t able to find us an opponent so we ended up being dropped on the map without any opposition.
But we didn´t drop as defenders, but as attackers.
At the end the game gave the contested sector to the enemy.

I just can assume that this is not supposed to happen.
If a unit drops to defend a planet and there is no attacker present that unit should not end up on the attacking side, thus hurting its own faction.

It's how CW works.

When one attacking side wins, they get a token. The next match, the original defenders begin a "counter-attack", and the sides switch around.

If they win the counter-attack, the attacking side lose their token.

If they lose the counter-attack, the attacking side keep their token. The match after that the attacking side goes on offensive again, and fight for the next token.

TL;DR: Doesn't matter if your side is attacking or defending a planet. Both sides alternate between "Attack" and "Defend" during matches.

Apparently this is a feature based on how much of the planet you control.

This post says its whoever gets a 12 man first, but I have also heard (not enough evidence) that the more of the planet that the opponent controls the higher chance of you doing a counter attack instead of defense.

Sounds like PGI is working as intended.

I am not sure. Hard to tell how many teams are fighting over a planet, but we had been consistently winning attacks and the planet showed each win, but we only defended once. We started with 1 win and got to 4 wins as the attackers. Only one Defense though.
