I was thinking while waiting to drop in CW about the faction system we got going now, It really doesn't allow the Mercenary nature of MWO to shine, so I thought I'd jot down a few thoughts and see what the forum thinks.
Factions/Mercs
Factions get LP, for faction units/ benefits, ie use LP for naming rights to IS or Clan units. Individual rewards could be an ability to claim a "Bloodname" for example..
Merc units get cbills to bid for merc unit names. ie 10 billion cbills for wolf dragoon name rights etc.
LP depends on "contract" length, but contracts not limited to length, ie can have single drop contract or 6 month contract, rewards tied to length.
Payments to mercs based on skills and w/l ratio and success of faction, ie the more "powerful" faction gets less and the weaker faction win gets larger cbill bonus. Incentivise playing for the weaker faction…(I see that PGI can increase benefits for certain low player count factions… Good start)
Faction badges show Merc or lonewolf, with inset showing contractor badge.
Attackers are faction led, mercs unable to initiate. Attackers can "employ" mercs to bolster force.
Defenders can call for short term backup, or offer contracts to garrison mercs on particular planetsfor bonuses.
Factions can only attack/defend their adjacent/own planets. Have "Permanent" player "council" per faction to offer long term contracts to merc corps from faction bank (bank controlled by PGI/Comstar). This could allow for a "combined" IS force to drive back the filthy clanners in the future…(I wonder where that idea came from.) ß-D
Fixed faction players can entice mercenaries to join their faction for larger rewards.
Mercs with long term contracts can only defend their adjacent/own garrisoned planets, "freelance" mercs can take short term contracts to attack/defend their contractors planets. These can be chosen from the faction map screen.
Freelancers can choose any faction, use any mech in their arsenal. Get no LP, Cbills only. Abilty to swap factions immediately.
Contractees can only use their factions class of mech, ie IS contractor - IS mechs, Clan contractor -Clan mechs. Rewarded with Cbills and LP. Ability to change when contract is up.
Premanent affiliation has the advantage of "control" over attacking, voting on player councils. Fixed forever, unable to leave faction.
This will allow everybody to do what they like, control over the game, bragging rights, unit names, earn heaps of cash, etc. It will also allow the deepest immersion into the mechwarrior culture.
Constructive ideas welcome, Flamers can go have a BBQ…ß-Þ

lol I do but I dont' really have time to post the length I'll need. I'll say that I agree 100% with an economy being needed in general but I've got a few ideas to add to what you've said

That and we're hoping to see dynamic contracts. Everything is still so new that there's a LOT of growing room to do.

Sure lets throw in economy when PGI can't even get CW combat balanced. Hey maybe they can find a cancer too in their spare time.
