Couldnt we get some checkboxes next to the contested planets in that list at the factionmap?
And player would join first full match from the checked ones? Guess that would speed up at least the soloqueue and players still could participate just in the battles they want....

As time goes by we will see more groups form-up. Right now it is a little painful but January/February we will see a lot more groups (~60% increase). Hang in there things will start to settling down and become easier/faster to join.
