Yes it does. My forum "alignment" changed to Steiner when I took the 7 days contract with them.

You can select your faction in the Faction tab in-game now.

I haven't taken any contracts but I am now apparently Davion. Why?

If you are part of a unit and the unit leader has selected a faction thats who you are alighned with till the end of the contract

Confirmed. I was Merc, and then Col. Havoc took a contract with Steiner. Will be this way until they get "Merc" units sorted out as a faction, as I understand it.
