I thought this might be helpful for people who are being confused between the labels on the contracts(ATTACK/DEFEND buttons) and the pop-ups(Attackers/Defenders needed notices). This is the logic that I've gathered and it should connect all the mental lapses and dots that are transparent in this big, Big, BIG Hot Fix of CW.
(EDIT: I don't have a clear understanding on Grey/Nuetral planets, but from observation, these specific planets are likely inactive or unrelated to your Faction's conflicts at the current moment in the Map-contacts list.)

[BLUE SHIELD] Attackers needed?
  • Defending territory on planet: BLUE SHIELD.
  • Attacking?: Attackers needed to take RED square/base back
  • (Counter-Attack match: You are Attacking)
[BLUE SHIELD] Defenders needed?
  • BLUE SHIELD: Friendly planet.
  • Defending?: Defending BLUE square/base from a RED advance
  • (Defend match: You are defending)
[RED KATANA] Attackers needed?
  • RED KATANA: Opposing Faction's planet
  • Attackers needed?: You'll be attacking a Red square/base in an offensive advance
  • (Attack match: You are Attacking)
[RED KATANA] Defenders needed?
  • RED KATANA: Opposing Faction's planet
  • Defender's needed?: You'll be defending a RED square/base that you captured on their planet
  • (Hold Territory match: You are defending)

On another note, The ATTACK/DEFEND buttons on contracts you'll see by manually selecting planets or checking pop-ups does nothing but to remind the player of what planet they are on and whether it is friendly or not. DISREGARD THIS AS THE 2 SYMBOLS ARE OBVIOUS ENOUGH.

Pay attention to the combo of symbol with brief description of whether your planet needs defenders or attackers. Do not mix up the pop-up notifications with the buttons on contracts. The Devs may fix this soon in a performance/clarity focussed patch in the near future.

I hope this helps. And if I'm wrong or a future update fixes this discrepancy, plese comment/ msg me. ;)
