It seems like there are way more planets then are needed and some of them probably never have games played on them. Why not reduce the number of planets so that people will queue together instead of everyone dispersed on random planets?

There are a lot of planets, but only a very few of them are open for battles at any given time. Each faction has 1 planet up for contention on each of their borders on any given day.

Want lots of planets? Try firing up Space Engine sometime and giving that a go. Makes you feel really really small.

Not ALL the Planets shown on the Map are attack-able. ;)

There's way too many planets. Why are there so many planets? The Command Chair said there would only be a few planets. This is a terrible star map.

This very simple answer is because the galaxy is a very big place filled with lots of stars, and the Inner Sphere isn't very big either.

The Inner Sphere is a region of interstellar space surrounding Earth to a radius of roughly 450 - 550 light-years, generally demarcated by the outer borders of the "Great Houses." Within this region of about 2 million stars, there are approximately 2000 inhabited planets. Beyond the Inner Sphere is the Periphery.

Edited to add link and second paragraph.

No love for the lore by quite a few players these days... There are so many planets in CW because there have always been that many planets in the BT universe. Gives the whole thing depth and character!
