Make more money, but lose the war. Gain less money, but win the war.

I guess a penalty is really warranted for those that "play not to win".

Well if they eventually implement rewards for controlling planets (I'm sure this is in the pipeline), then winning the war will hopefully give you more money.

I think it would be hilarious, if not amusing... if units that were responsible for losing the battles, but getting lots of money, would get overall less rewards over time for not playing to win. Some sort of "unit success" reward modifier of sorts could work (maybe use some weak form of Elo for that).

This may possibly cause unit jumping and/or faction changing, but it you're doing it solely for personal gain and not for the faction... they can gtfo. :P

I'd like to see units that control a planet (tags shown) get monetary rewards for doing so. It would be cool if planets gave a daily income that was split between members of the unit. If my unit controlled a planet it could give us like 20 million c-bills a day to hold it. This would be split between all the members in the unit evenly so the less people you have the more money you'd get but also the more difficult it would be to hold planets. This would encourage units to even more actively try to lock down planets to call their own.
