The long answer is that there is a huge list of Mecha from different anime that FASA (the creators of Battletech) used as illustrations for their game. Certain copyright laws mean that these images (or images based on them) cannot be used in any money making venture (copyright sucks like that)
An easy fix would be to totally redesign the mechs, but then the Battlemaster wouldn't look like a Battlemaster, and it's the look that Mech fans like us want right?

Sort of. Robotech was the original name for BattleTech (essentially 1st edition). Second edition saw the name changed to BattleTech. The copyright issue comes from older anime series which is owned by the studios and distributed in the United States by Harmony Gold (who are the ones that make a big f-in deal of it all).

Yup, all my favorite Mechs. Fingers crossed they find a way into the game.

I've noticed that Sarna's Unseen and Reseen lists do not agree, nor are they up to date. Also, of note the new "reseen" Battlemaster is a miniature included in the 25th Anniversary starter box, and is depicted on the side artwork. For instance, I'm pretty sure there's no such thing as a Battlemaster IIC. Someone made an unofficial one and uploaded it on MegaMek.

I actually liked the Re-seen BattleMaster A LOT better than the Unseen.

Uh no it was called battledroids. Nice guess though.
The actual lawsuit comes from FASA purchasing/acquiring the rights to distribute the toys but not the rights to use the designs. So basically in the end FASA lost the court case the missing 21 came into being and that was that. Why FASA didn't just print the offending units without art or aim Duane loose at the designs with redesign in mind I'll never know.
I know this, the project phoenix rebuilds are hideous.
edit
Speaking of dougram....what mech is that in the background there (lol)

Why some of the designs are "reseen" ^^^. HG was involved in the renamed toys of the mechs from Dougram, but iirc never fully owned the IP. Thus the Dougram mechs returned to us, while (most) of the actual Robotech ones did not.
What bearing that has on the game, we have yet to find out.
