Right now the only reason to strive to get your Unit's tag on a planet is bragging rights.

I would love to see a system where the Unit that earns the right to get their tag on a planet gets some sort of reward.

Possible rewards could be: a small amount of LP given to every member of the Unit, or perhaps a nice chunk of C-bills added to that Unit's coffers (even though they're useless at the moment).
