Who would be paying those contracts, other lone wolves?

I don't really get what you mean by "single pilot contracts." You don't need to be in a group to take a contract.
Do you mean 1-game contracts?

Actually I'd like to see some method for units to hire lone-wolves for a agreed upon price that would be paid out of the unit's collective purse...
As an example we'll say Mercenary unit X hires lone-wolf B for a period of time ( x number of games, x number of weeks, etc, etc.) At the end of the contract the Merc corps can review his performance with a rating, to keep it fair the lone-wolf would rate unit as well)

That might be interesting
I'd like to see performance based contracts though. Perform ebtter, win more games you get a higher rating. Perform poorly, loose a lot of games, you get a lower rating.
Not just for lone wolves either
But, let's use your lone wolf example
So lets say you start with a base rating of 500 out of 1000 for a new lone wolf. Unit A hires you for lets say 20 gamesand the base pay for a rank 500 is 2 million cbills. You wouldn't get the cbills earned in matches, you would get your payment up front when you sign the contract. The mission earnings go into the unit's coffers.
If you win 50%, your rating stays the same
if you win 60% it goes up a bit and your next contract would command a little more base pay
so on and so forth
If you lose 60% it goes down and your base pay would go down as well.
Lone wolves who win often would become highly sought after mercs while those that don't.... well they would be hired for attacks for cheap cannon fodder lol
For units, i'd like to see a similar system but they would earn payment just like they do now, but with a similar scale. Win more, higher rating, higher earnings. Lose more, lower rating, less earnings.
that's essentially how merc units worked in Btech. The highly sought after units commanded better pay.

That'd be a cool system, Sand, but kinda I doubt we'll ever see it :/

I'd be fighting even at rank 0010/1000 if I had to. Gotta impress the merc board one of these days with my dancing 'phract act
