Ive heard people talk of ELO (as related to the game and not the band :-)

I understand its some kind of player ranking system which determines our skill level and the opponents we face.

Are the ELO rankings in bands and as we get better we move up into a higher "league" so to speak?

The reason I ask is I seem to be facing better players all of a sudden.

Is this an ELO thing or am I imagining things?

Elo exists but the segregation of players does not happen to my knowledge. So you are likely to mix very high and very low elo players on one team against 12 people of average elo on the other.

This makes game play experience very difficult to predict. However, you can generally figure out who has = ELO to you by paying attention to names that you see frequently in matches. I see one player named SCAR very regularly, therefore I can assume he has equivalent ELO to me.

I am consistently paired with people who are using trial 'mechs, and people who seem to know more of what they're doing than I do..
I guess that's good?

ELO is not bracketed in MWO (at least, not that I've ever heard of). The Match Maker tries to assemble teams with total ELOs that are close to even. Unfortunately, this often results in skill levels in game being a massive hodge-podge. For example, you could have a team of12 players with perfectly average ELO scores opposed by a team of 9 players with perfectly average scores, 2 above average scores, and 1 dismal score.

For example, say that player skill was ranked 1 to 5, and 3 was the average. You could have the following two teams face off.

3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3
vs
3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 4 4 1

From a stance of totals and averages, the teams are even. But what happens when we add mech quality (something not really factored into match making) in? Assume mech quality is graded from A (highest) to E (lowest). This match would be still considered even.

3C 3C 3C 3C 3D 3B 3B 3B 3C 3C 3C 3C
vs
3B 3B 3B 3C 3C 3C 3A 3A 3D 4A 4A 1A

Things look a lot less even now. The MWO Match Maker trying for 3x4 (3 mechs of each of the 4 weight classes per team) helps somewhat, but it does not stop a fairly average player from bringing a stock AS7-K into a match with an enemy team that has a pair of Laser Vomit Timber Wolves with above average players.

Lots of people have been groping with trying to find ways to make the MM produce better games. And while the MM does an ok job, I wager there are better ways to do it than we currently have. And still, there are things the MM has no way to factor in. Is one player a griefer that intends to TK at least one person? Is someone playing with a good loadout that he's never tried before, and so is unfamiliar with it (or has his weapons grouped sub-optimally)? Has one player been up too late and fatigue is affecting him? Is someone gaming drunk? Is someone going to get pulled away from the match 30 seconds in by their 4 year old redecorating the walls in crayon (or the keyboard with juice)?
