I have no idea how CW works, how to get started, what faction I should choose, etc. Is there a good source of information for this? I thought I could figure it out by playing around in the MWO client but I'm confused. Any help would be great.

Try the new player area and see of there is a step by step posted. Basically you can go solo or join a unit. The main interface has a tab for community warfare. Select it, then select a plant (to the right) and you can then build a drop deck,. You have to select the loaner mech in the window and click edit then pick one of your own. Four times - once for each mech.

If you are solo pick a plane and launch from a button lowish in CW tab view.

A team has to make sure they don't group for Public. You can add yourself to a CW drop group by selecting the unit member with the shied by their name if you share the unit with them.

While you wait for the drop to start you can still change your 4 mechs. Also pay attention to which one is first in case you don't want to start with that one.

To be completely honest with you, besides a different method/mode of fighting, CW is really for those people that are familiar with the lore of the Battletech universe and want to experience that kind of immersion.

As for "the point" of what YOU experience, as a solo player, you get to choose a faction and try to help them accomplish whatever the "higher ups" of that faction want to accomplish. You're just a small fish in a big pond, so expect to be treated as such. The best thing you can do is to try to make mechs with a plan in mind. Something you can do to help in as many situations as possible....ECM to cover as many people as possible, BAP/CAP/TAG/NARC to help the LRMs...that kind of thing. Then just follow the herd, pay attention, do whatever you can to help out wherever you can.

Ultimately, you're not going to experience what some of the larger units are going to. Those are the guys that have their unit tags on the planets. It's ok, they're really into this and they're enjoying it. No reason you can't, too. Just remember that odds are pretty good that you're going to experience a lot of gameplay that is similar to what you see in the Solo Queue (ignoring the mission parameters in favor of a deathmatch, a lot of low Elo players...CW doesn't care about Elo), come prepared to fight whatever way your team decides to.

Good luck, man.

Community Warfare is all about the big units competing against each other for territory and C-Bills. Pugs have their place in CW, but don't expect to have a positive experience as a solo pugger.

It's best to do a little research on the clans/factions and decide which one you like the best. Most of them originate from Earth cultures, like Kurita is roughly Japanese, Liao is kinda Chinese, Steiner is German, FRR is Scandinavian... or you could just pick the one with the prettiest flag or the best paying contract. =]

After you decide your faction, try to research some of the in game units. The FRR has a central Teamspeak hub, for instance, where the majority of their units convene and collaborate, and I'm sure other factions have similar public servers.

Alternatively, you could decide what units you like first and just go with them, regardless of what faction they play as. For instance, if 228th really interested you, they are Mercenaries, so they won't always be flying the same flag. Check out the recruitment threads in each faction/clan's sub-forum!

Hope this helps! =]

K here goes:

Make sure you know which side you are on.
If you have IS mechs, chose an IS faction.
If you clan, chose a clan faction.

If you chose clan, you cannot use IS mechs in battle.

Then, fo to gaction menu and look at the planets in the right hand side box.
Chose a planet that has many players, but ideally, has almost a 12 man group.

For example, a 48 person map as 4 12s. So chose a map that is 46-44 and you should play quick.

Then, follow the experienced players in your team and ignore the chicken shiats that complain
and do nothing and enup with 100 damage after 4 mechs...

And that is it really...

Thanks, this was helpful. Are certain factions limited to certain mechs? Or can I use all my IS mechs if I join any IS faction?

Atm, you have to use 4 mechs and reach a minimum weight of 160t and maximum of 240t between those 4. Otherwise there are no limitations
