I am having a hard time with this mech. I can't seem to make a build that is very effective. Anyone having any luck with it?

put a UAC 20 on one arm. Put 4 tons of ammo, fill up the rest with Medium lasers.

Medium pulse lasers are your friend. Load up on them and pack in the heat sinks... Fire groups are also your friend. Shoot them in groups of 3-4 and spam away.

UAC10 + 5 ERML is the build I had for my best matches.

Consider the Wubgoyle (6 CMPL) or some sort of ballistic Gargoyle (at least 4 med lasers + large ballistic).

I like the LBX20 instead of a UAC20.

I've run a configuration similar to the Gargoyle C, which is basically a UAC/20 and a bunch of ER Medium Lasers as some posters have previously mentioned. It works quite well.

Bear in mind that the Gargoyle has sixteen fixed double heat sinks in the engine, so it lends itself well to energy-heavy configurations, not unlike the Warhawk.
