Hey all,
Posting this in case other people haven't realised this yet - it took me a long time to realise it myself...
I don't often upgrade the engines in my Mechs, mainly because I'm not particularly *good* and I don't have a lot of time to play and XL engines are *so* expensive that I can never justify spending all my C-bills on them.
You could always buy C-bills with MC and then spend them on an engine, but that is really expensive - 6.5 million C-bills = 4,000 MC, and an XL engine costs at least 2/3 of that C-bill bundle in one fell swoop (so at least 2600 MC).
*However*, there is a way to get a few engines really cheap, specifically the XL190 for the Locust, the XL255 that you need for your CTF-4X, and the workhorse XL300 that you can use everywhere. For the XL190 buy the Pirates Bane; for the XL255, the champion Spider; and for the XL300, buy the champion Jenner. All three are under 1500 MC normally, and they periodically get discounted. As I write this they are all 35% off, so they are all under 1000 MC. If you rip out the engines and sell the rest back, you even get a few C-bills in the bargain.
Just a thought - use it, don't use it,
- voodoo

Also, the VTR-9(C) at 2817MC on special has an XL350 engine which fits the Jester very nicely. As a bonus, the Jester's STD295 engine is only 2 tons heavier than the XL350, so if you shave 2t off the VTR and swap engines then you still have two usable mechs.
