What the hell does that have to do with how F2P games making money?

MWO is large transactions for a small amount of in-game content. Successful F2P games(Eve, WoT, LoL, DoTa) are the opposite. Eve and WoT being on the higher end of small transactions.

not really true as an eve player for 8 years its a bigger time sink to make money and in a much more boring way then MWO, and tanks man you have no idea, did you play it when gold ammo came out? i bet not when it would cost people 1$ a shot to **** you, LoL is the same as MWO since you can pay to get things faster thats it, DoTa has done it the best with information packages, and cosmetics that are cool

A little over a week of playing for a Timberwolf seems ok. Most mechs are much cheaper.

You don't have to be a completionist, just set a goal for the Mechs and equipment you want and go for it.

It is a small grind, but it is the best grind. You play to have fun anyway. If you don't like playing the game to earn stuff, drop some coin.

Didnt spend much time on WoT, it was boring. Bigger time sink to make money has nothing to do with the value on transactions.

LoL and MWO are no where near the same. Each weak they change the available toons and each toon is already "kitted" to its max potential. You do not have to unlock or buy anything extra to make the toon function. Plus you can own multiple toons for a small amount of money since their transaction value is smaller. In LoL, you pay to get pretty in-game content or that new toon faster. Getting the toon faster is the only similarity between LoL and MWO but its WAY easier to gain in-game money in LoL than MWO.

There are other MOBA's that are just as successful as MWO and most of them do small transactions just like LoL does.

Yes, well opinions will vary as to what is good/bad. Some free-to-play games do a good job of hiding the grind, some do a terrible job, but where that line falls for people is not going to be a static thing. I just don't like the excessive hostility this topic brings with it.

Is the mastering of three variants a major pain in the ass? Absolutely, without question and hesitation. It's completely unimaginative and lazy and any other derogatory qualifier you might wish to lay upon it...

That said, MW:O is a F2P entity and as such there is a necessary evil to create sticking-points to make players question which is more important to them... "time" or "money"?
Of course that is the reality of MWO and all other F2P games, but often times the more successful ones do a better job at making people want to spend money instead of making them feel forced to spend money if they want to compete.

Hysterics? That isn't what I was going for I was just pointing out that people on both sides of this topic tend to get carried away, and I used your post as an example because it was over the top and you know it. You don't have to agree with him, but in no way did he say that he wanted "all the mechs for free in a matter of hours", and belittling his complaint because you are tired of the topic instead of saying why you feel differently is rather petty. Please take no offense I actually like what you have to say most of the time I just don't get the immediate go for the throat style you tend to use in this topic.

I hear ya Replay', I'm not completely sure what the actual reason(s) are for such a orchestrated grind Hoop jump. It's not really a serious challenge requiring significant skill. A new or weak player can be carried to a win, and eventually they will secure the grind objective. As for why three mech's verses two or even Five, your guess is as good as mine. I would like to see an incorporated side campaign that would allow players to drop with their unseasoned Battlemechs for the master certification.
Or, perhaps a $1,000 dollar mastered Golden Mechs which would offer a player the option to step right to the front of the Mastered Battlemech line. : D

The most common amount of viable variants a mech has is 3. Hence the 3 requirement for the skills. Those with 1 or 2 variants would not make for ideal additions to the game as there would be little to no variation in them.

Just take your facvourite mech, buy the hero variant. Hell, PGI has even given away a couple of variants with a30% cbill boost. Then if you're going to put in more than a couple hours in a day, buy a day of premium time. You'll be ballin in no time

"But I have to pay for that!" you may say

Fair enough, but in a free game... pay and skip the grind, or don't pay and deal with it!

Oh yea, and don't use consumables if you're tryin to save those bills :D

Especially lately, PGI has been showering us with free gifts / easy ways to earn a bnunch of bonus money..... it's free-gift-kakke all up in here!

FWIW your right... I got all worked up and lashed out and most certainly did apply a health slathering of hyperbole. If you read my posts then you know I'm not usually so quick to snap. Mia culpa. ^_^

The "grind" (pun) of the never-ending barrage of "the grind sux" post just seems to never end and it doesn't help when well meaning long-time members waste no opportunity to besmirch PGI over what is a fundamental aspect of F2P games...

I hate playing the apologist but the issue with the grind is a lot deeper than the "easy fix" so many members like to think it is... The reality is before they can increase prices (unlikely) or increase payout, they need to inject an alternative micro-transaction revenue stream...

Right now MW:O is "macro" because aside from the paint and bays and schemes... there "is" nothing micro about MW:O.

Unfortunately OP, you're just expected to pay out the ass immediately if you want to not deal with the grind as much, and even then the grind is far from eliminated.

Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, Path of Exile if you argue how successful it is, there might be others that I can't think of but that probably means there aren't.

League of Legends still has summoner levels, rune pages, and actually buying champions can take a lot of time for what you get, and it's not much better than MWO as far as grinding. The only thing that LoL does any better is not forcing you to grind unwanted champions to play the ones you like most, and while that is a big improvement because it sucks so much ******* ass dealing with the mech tree in MWO, it's still not that much better.

To be fair it's like $1.25 for 24 hours of premium time

Now I dunno about your personal situation but I don't think $1.25 is too far out of the ass

Well you also paid 50-60$ up front for a game, and then $20+ for any expansions down the road. The content released was the content you got forever. You can pay literally nothing for (albeit time consuming) access almost everything in this game, and it's constantly being added with new stuff.

Not saying that I think F2P is the way to go, because I generally don't like the idea. But of all the F2P games I have seen, MWO is pretty lenient. A lot of people complaining about this or that hee have not even paid 10$ into this game let alone the 60-70 that a complete game charges you these days (Or incomplete... *cough*BF4*cough*)

And I'll tell you what else,
I'll take MWO's free to play system where I can pay for what I want, over having to install f**king Origin for a game I paid in full. ANY DAY OF THE WEEK.

Mech bays have far more value, especially considering they're permanent, and cost about as much as 1 day of premium time where much of it is wasted unless you literally grind all day long.

Obviously $1.25 isn't all that much money, but if you use it to buy premium time it's pretty much insulting what you get out of it, also PGI forces you to spend $7 minimum for MC purchases because "micro" isn't in their corporate vocabulary.

You can't have your cake and eat it too. For this game to be free to play, there has to be a trade-off. In this case, it's a long grind to encourage players to spend RL dollars on Hero Mechs and Premium Time.

That being said, PGI has been giving away Mechs, Bays, and Premium Time like crazy over the last year. You just have to stay in the loop by checking the site a couple times a week. :)

Actually level means nothing other than getting summoner abilities. You are still facing other players at the same level. That makes level irrelevant. I made a smurf a long time ago, took less than a month to hit 30 only playing a few hours a night. Dominion and ARAM make level fast easy.

Rune pages are end game items anyways. You only buy runes at lvl 30.

I'd rather pay $70 for a full game than the $100+ I've invested to get a mildly large stable of mechs.

its a free-to-play game. they all have grinds. if you want to short-cut that, buy some premium time and/or a hero mech.

That only makes sense if you can pay money to not grind.

In MWO there is only grind, premium time hardly makes a difference, hero/champions don't really matter, and you can only spend MC to convert to GXP if you have the XP on a mech to begin with.

Comparison of MWO and WarThunder (another F2P game).

In WT, Premium vehicles double rewards, both of research and money. MWO you get 30%.

In WT, Premium time is +100% research and +150% money. MWO it's +50% to both.

(Fun fact, in MWO the benefits of premium vehicle and premium time are additive, in WT they are multiplicative, which means using both will yield roughly 4x income)

In WT, you can pay real money directly to unlock vehicle modifications (analogous to the mech-tree). MWO you can spend General XP, but to get more GXP is either a completely obtuse grind or you pay money to move leftover XP from a mech you actually play (You still need to have earned the XP somewhere!).

Spent well over $1500 on this game and I am looking for ways to spend more. Have over 135 mechs and I am trying to level all to at least full basic. Hasn't felt like a grind because as they say, if you enjoy yourself you will never work a day in your life.
