In the game.

From the Main page of the UI, hit the Faction tab (at the top of the screen). The first time you go in there it'll ask you to accept a contract for a specific faction.

Contract lengths vary from 1 week to permanent, with better Loyalty Point rewards for longer contracts. If you ever need to break a contract, there is a c-bill penalty associated with it, and you'll have a 2-day wait before you can accept a new contract, so if you're unsure which faction you want to go with, and want to try a few of 'em out, take short-term contracts.

To note: Do not pick a permanent faction contract yet; CW is just starting and most of its functions are not in yet.
It's advised to have at least 4 mechs of your own before you try the Faction Tab's Community Warfare.

In the mean time... A successful match: Yes, all CW matches are pretty long; there's 96 mechs in total fighting in them as opposed to 24.
