LOL, my King Crabs (any of them) chew through Atlases easy. Only thing they can't mount is ECM...in every other way they are as good or better. High weapon hardpoints make sniping over ridges much easier than an atlas (especially the torso ones, but even the arms are mounted close to cockpit level).
I've owned 2 Atlases so far and I'm not impressed.

Light - I don't have a lot of experience in lights...but Spiders are definitely the hardest to kill for me. Their hit boxes are so narrow that it almost feels like they're cheating.
Medium - Shadowhawk. No contest. They are a lot of fun to play. Quick and powerful.
Heavy - Catapult K2 is my favorite. High hardpoints + dual AC/20 capability
Assault - King Crab. I got one for free. I didn't expect to like it, but they are just unstoppable IMO. You can configure them for almost anything, but dual AC/20s are where they really shine. I think they are the only assault that can mount dual AC/20s...I can one-shot lights with them.

Boy someone isn't a fan of lights lol.
Been away from the game for 6mos or so... is the ecm spider with an ER PPC still a viable build in the updated CW?

Firestarters & Jenners of course.

With (ER)PPC speed nerfs, you see it a lot less since it's much harder to make shots moving fast with the slower projectile.

Yup, big difference. I take two stalkers, 4N, and the 3- laser and lerm respectively, then two spiders.
I rake in the cash.
Because you are an IS jock, and if you drop like a pug, you'll face 10-12 man teams, on comms, mostly likely in clan mechs, it becomes less about winning, and more about damage.
CW is horribly broke- I quit a week ago.
That said
ATTACK: quickly! run your spiders with arty/UAV right at the gate- one after the other, arty the generator on the OTHER side of the gate (jump jet over) drop arty, launch a UAV, then spend the next 10 second before you die pummeling the generator
do NOT waste time on the turrets on the wall, someone else will easily kill those
IF the gate opens, grab a stalker go to the gate and pummel whatever you see- take arty and UAV- save your last spider for the zerg rush on the whatever objective is left.
IF the gate isn't open, repeat step one.
DEFENDING, take the lerm stalker, and soak whoever knocks at the gate. run out of ammo/ eject grab laser stalker.
If that dies, or its end of game (defenders win so often) eject grab a spider to clean up on assists.
profit
but if you're running CW thinking you're going to win dropping solo.......go to pugs, faster, more fun, about the same profit really

Short answer (IMO) No. It so depends on your play style.....ie an atlas is a poor mech for scouting/spotting, a locust, ya don't want to brawl in it.
please, IS mechs earn as much. IF you had the "best" clan mechs attacking against 12 mans using IS mechs, you'd get hosed. Each. And, Every. Time.
CW is about 10-12 man teams, on coms, regardless the tools used, defenders win most time, and 12 mans win the rest

When in doubt, Centurion.
The CN9-A packs 1B 2E 3M
The CN9-D packs 2B 2E 2M
The CN9-AH packs 3B 3M
The CN9-AH packs 4E 2M
The Centurion family has always been a very flexible chassis, just look at the stock configuration for the CN9-A it has something for every range, LRM's for mid to long, AC 10 for short to mid and Mlas for short.
Also obligatory

Timicon, long range support and brawling are about as mutually exclusive as it gets. The arguable exception being builds with lots of class 5 autocannons.
P.S. to any new pilots reading this- be aware that a lot of the info in this thread is now very obsolete

metamechs.com is a good place to start.
In short:
Iights- FS is king, Jenner is queen, Spider is Duke...whatever. Raven 3l sniper is too niche/specialized. Rest of the mechs, not so much.
Mediums-more role specific due to quirks. BRAWL -Griffin, HBK-G, Cent Wang/AH, SUPPORT- HBK-J, Treb, Shads.
HEAVIES!!!! - THUNDERBOLTS!!! All the way. Get 3. 5SS(Thunderwub), 9S(ERPPC of GOD- this variant makes Clanners cry), 9SE(4lpl face-burner - not great/not bed either)
Cataphract 3D. GET YOUR THUNDERBOLTS BEFORE THEY NERF THEM - people be QQing
Assaults - Stalkers/Misery(just dont use an XL engine...thats bush league), BANSHEE E(Dakka King with 2 shield arms, SQUEEE!!!), King Crab if you spend $, dual AC20 is no joke, neither is dual gauss.
Yesss. Or grab 4 top dogs and put two lpls and 4mpls and you have a deathstar. Lazer vomit, great cooldowns and heat gen. Very powerful build. Go try it out!

One... Necro thread is several years old and resurrected sometime last year and then again resurrected now.
Two, Alt (advanced knowledge plus new account)...
Three, response to necro post of a few months more than two years old.
Finally.... Why?
Why is this a thing?
*Moves on.*
(I'd understand if this was a real new player asking if these "bests" are still valid... but no, it's an alt of an experienced player that should know better...)

yes, has great heat generated, plenty to shut you down after 3 shots.
assuming you are running a Standard 300 and near max armor (if not why not?) you do not have enough heat sinks to keep firing everything for 10 seconds, while that would be fine for some veterans that would be a bad build for a new player.
to get enough tonage for heatsinks you would ether go slow or put in an XL engine, and no-one with any idea what they are doing would recomend an XL in a Thunderbolt.
and yes, resurecting a thread more than 2 years old is generaly frowned on.

I'm impressed with the amount of trolling in this thread.
I take
Stalker (I like the STK-4N with 6LLs)
Thunderbolts (I like 9SE with 3LPLs and 2 MPs)
Grasshopper (I like the 5P same build as Thunderbolt but a bit more tanky and higher mounted weapons...)
Blackjack (I use the BJ3 with 3LPLs)
Basically I use mostly Pulse Lasers or Large Lasers because no ammo and I can stay alive and do damage all match in 1 mech if possible. The mechs that use ammo like Dakka(AC5 Ac10 etc) don't seem viable because you use all the ammo and you are useless after. Assuming you do your best and stay alive as long as possible.
You can use anything though. You can use the Atlas but against a coordinated team you usually get killed easily in a brawler.
I like to engage at medium ranges and I just play better with Pulse Lasers.
Maybe you are very good with PPCs or Gauss or whatever. In that case the best mech for you might be a PPC mech.
Maybe you are a great brawler and you take down 4-5 enemies in an Atlas before you go down.
Try a lot of mechs in Quick Play and when you find your best play that.

to be fair the OP is more than 2 years old, so many of the Mechs that are now concidered subpar were not when the answer was posted.
this thread had been dead for almost a year before FRR Battletech resurected it, and had been resurected once before after more than a year.

over the past two years, since the date of the original post.
Beyond which, the state of the game has also changed in significant ways.
Any player who wishes to revisit this topic, please do so in a more recent thread.
[mod]As the original topic does not have strong relevancy
