So originally in the Role Warfare blog post there are noted to be 3 Roles, described as Scout, Attacker/Defender and Command.

Since then there has been rumor that Command has been moved out of roles and placed somewhere else, the Command role renamed into something else and a fourth role called Support has been added.

Non-Command aspects of the tree formerly known as Command include things like airstrikes and surveilence sweeps. So it could be called Communications or Intelligence. We'll call it Comms here.

Also Attacker/Defender sounds kinds silly.

So lets arrange it simply... And arrange it next to the starting Mechs.

Jenner - Scout
Hunchback - Soldier
Catapult - Support
Atlas - Comms

Interesting...


Jenner - Scout - Thief
Hunchback - Soldier - Fighter
Catapult - Support - Archer
Atlas - Comms - Wizard

No that's going to far...

Or is it?

i dunno, either im really noob or i dont see these 'roles' at all. i see scouts, which all they do is just steal the base... the atlas is not a comm.. its a death dealer. soldier class mechs aka everything not a scout and an atlas, just seems mediocre.

does this game even balance the roles out per team? i always see like 4 atlas's per team. should be 1 or 2 at most. the teams should be balanced by tonnage not amount of players i think.

I know it's somewhere around here. There was a months old "How about we add Fire Support as a role" thread that was commented on by a Dev that was quoted in a "What role do you want to play" thread and now they appear to be devoured whole by the forum.

Yeah, virtually no relevant info, it's probably still fluxing and likely will be in edit right up until the game goes gold.

What we have is some out of date notes, vague chassis catagories and the knowledge that there is no healer.

We all have experience in roles used in games to various levels of success.

Area denial, buffers, debuffers, tankers, scouts, suppression, snipers, DPS, skirmishers and/or harassers.

I'm sure we can make some educated guesses / unreasonable hopes / unrealistic fantasies about what the roles might be.

You can't tie roles to 'mechs, or to even variants, because weapon loadout, mobility, armor all make a difference.

You can take an Atlas and make it a close range brawler, or purely a long range fire support 'mech. The Commando is a scout, but pick the LLaser variant and you can just snipe all day with it -- not well, but significantly different than the SRM variant.

Take the Cat. In its prime, it's some long range indirect fire support, but you could swap out the 260 engine for a 300 or 300XL, drop the LRM's for Streaks, and have a jump capable short range skirmisher.

In the real world, look at things like the Ford Focus, Subaru Impreza, and Mitsubishi Lancer. Most people see the entry level econo family sedans, but if you swap out some of the insides, you end up with world class rally cars. Totally different roles.

He's right. Which is probably why they talked about the "pilot trees" being separate from "mech trees". You may like the scout tree, and gain different proficiencies in scout variants, but from what I remember reading the "pilot tree" is going with you to those other scout mechs. Even if you are piloting an Atlas in its 100 ton scout role.

"Hey Bob, walk the Atlas around that corner and tell me if you see anything."

"ok."

BOOM BOOM BOOM

"Yeah I see a bunch of mechs. Some of them are down. Coming back now."
