So I stumbled onto this video from steam and as I watched it, I've come to a full realization of how bad tier 5 gameplay is. I'm not talking about the guy playing the game. Its his first few games and he hasn't learned about weapon ranges and how LRMs work or weapons grouping in general or correct map positioning. The one thing that amazes me is the positioning of his team. They are scattered all over the place. The alpine game had nobody fighting for the hill. It was random engagements throughout the map. The just stood out in the open on river city. Most of the engagements looked like every mech for himself. This is what you have to go through as a new player??? I hope that it doesn't take long to get out of this tier.

question 1: where did you see he is Tier 5?

question 2: won't new players get handled as Tier 3?

how do you know the player tiers?
ALso, assuming you're correct, uhm... they're brand new players, what exactly are you expecting from players who don't know the maps, don't have a wide selection of mechs, don't know the game yet, etc.?

It took me about 45 minutes to make it through Tier 5 a few weeks ago. That's about as easy of a tier "grind" I've ever had. Tier 4 didn't take much longer.

Oh god why...shooting his SRMs at 600M, but not his LRMs?
His sensitivity is also too high to aim his AC2s at that range.

Also, lol, AC2s. Was that a stock build?

hmm, well that's new to me. thanks for the info.

so instead of letting them play with decent players to learn from those how to play, PGI gave new players a sh*tty excuse of a tutorial and let them duke it out in the underbelly. *sigh*

Probably. I started around october and dug myself so deep into a whole that I am just now starting to see progress k/d , w/l wise. The new player experience in tier 4 /3 (cause you hit tier 3 no matter how bad you do) was pretty goddamn painful. Still now that I understand what the game wants I do pretty decent.

I made a clan account to see what tier 5 was like and it took me all of 1 match to get to tier 4 and 3 matches total to get into tier 3.

Lots of static mechs just staring at you. Was another dimension to be sure. Posted Image

No, that's hell! Tier 2 and upwards is Valhalla, where you have to prove yourself every single fight, just to be restored afterwards. And every single fight you hone your skills to be ready when the hordes of Hel and the Frost Giants come to cross Bifrost and kill Heimdall. Also mead.

They have a PSR multiplier to rank them up if they're good. Pitting newbies in tier 3, against veteran players, would be a horrible experience and was cited as a reason for many new players leaving prior to the introduction of PSR. You can't learn **** if you don't even get the time to get accustomed to the game and weapon mechanics!

Its also easier to perform well when you are consistently paired in games with experienced players instead of entire teams that wander off.

I think hes refering to the seal clubbing potential. At least I hope so.

The cockpit effect disgust me even more now that i spectate lots of newbies on steam that have it enabled because they don't know what it is and how to disable it.

Yep, that's about right.

I was put firmly in the middle of T5 after spending a lot of time switching between mechs and the steep learning curve ruined my ELO.

Although the worst thing about everyone all over the place is it can lead to stomps by teams that work together.

I try to give some direction, but it only works some of the time. I remember one game on forest colony where I was in a crab with a group of heavies and assaults up against 3-4 heavily damaged opponents. I called for a push focusing fire right before someone said that we need to fall back because we're taking too much damage. One Atlas followed me. We took out one before focus fire did us in. They then overrode the rest of the group.

Although I will say that everyone moving and fighting on their own is much more enjoyable than the old days of everyone hiding and afraid to make contact.

That moment in Tourmaline when he's staring at an enemy ECM raven. He can't make up his mind whether he's a friend or foe because the targeting information isn't showing. Poor fellow. It was nice to see him finally figure out how LRMs work after a few games. I can see how they might be a little tricky to learn.

This is a great video for PGI to watch if they want to see what sort of problems new players have with the game. Understanding weapon ranges seems to be a big one.

Yes it's the EBJ trial mech. I've actually run it in CW a few times and you can out damage most players with it if you know what you're doing. One thing I like about it for new players is that it's cool running. There isn't enough UAC/2 ammo for an experienced player, but a new player will usually be alright.

I got to see this first hand when a founder buddy of mine played at my house recently. He hasn't played since CB and was put in tier 5 for whatever reason. It was... Lets just say that I wouldn't mind logging on to his game when I've had a really bad day and want to pretend like I'm that freaking good.

Was it really any easier for new players a couple of years ago?

I think not.

We still had to figure out mechs, weapons, maps, ranges......the whole smash.

Yeah, I encountered that same problem when they put PSR in, they only took data from a nine month period where I was almost entirely inactive so I was placed into tier 5. I was pretty salty that this happened to me while newbies got a jump start to tier 3 for no reason(while it lasted). I felt kinda bad stomping on so many clear newbies, hopefully that didn't ruin the game for anyone.
