I'm look at getting a Sager laptop. With an i7-4710 or 4720 and GTX970m, what kind of FPS are you getting at 1080p? Or with the 980m? Game settings would help too.

I currently run a desktop with a 4770k@4.5ghz and a 780Ti. At 2560x1440, particals at medium, everything else at very high except shadow and shading at high, I stay at 60-100fps even in brawls. I'm looking for similar experience with a laptop.

I'm thinking the experience on the laptop should be almost identical, 2560x1440 is 77% more pixels, but the 780Ti isn't 77% more powerful, so I think the 970m should be enough for a fun competitive MWO experience @ 1080p. The 980m should just be future proofing.

Thanks in advance

I have a 4710M with a GTX 870M and it does pretty well at high settings (particles at medium or low, can't remember). It isn't a constant 60fps, but the amount of horsepower needed to do that is way beyond what a laptop can offer anyway. It plays pretty well overall IMO.

Thank you xWiredx. Anyone else have a 970m or 980m?

i have a sager with an i7 and amd hd7970m. honestly, i havent met a gaming laptop yet that didnt have heating issues and ive owned quite a few over the years. i use my desktop most of the time, it has a crappier cpu and a desktop version of the 7970, but not shutting down 6-8 times a day is worth it.

Heat issues are normally due to thermal paste drying out, fan/power settings is not set right, overclocked too much? If you are not overclocking you shouldn't need to shut down your laptop and it shouldn't throttle. Look for problems/solutions inside of your laptop (hardware issues AND software settings) (beside maybe, in addition to that, using a good laptop cooling pad with fans.) When was the last time you used compressed air to blow into the running fan exhausts? Make sure your fans are running during this operation (stress gpu/cpu or something) and blow some compressed air into the holes and see how much dust flies out of there.

You're going to be more limited by the capabilities of the mobile CPU than the GPU. You'll be fine with either the 970m or 980m. If you have the money, then go all-out. If you're trying to budget a certain amount, I would go with the 970m with the intent on getting an upgraded CPU instead. Going from a 4710m to a 4810m will yield better results than staying with the 4710m and going with a 980m over the 970m. MWO eats CPU cycles.

Exactly what Wired said, and has said before in other threads,

Pure CPU clocks is what you need. :)

@Misfire, I also agree that something is wrong with your laptop. I had an Asus G73 with a 5870m which overheated but repasting the GPU fixed that. My Alienware M17s never overheated. Try cleaning your airvents and if that doesn't work repaste your GPU. I recommend Innovative Cooling Diamond paste, but any quality paste will do. Go to forum.notebookreview.com for more info on repasting your specific laptop. notebookreview is probably the most knowledgeable place on the internet for laptop enthusiasts. (overclock.net is the place to go for desktops).

@Therrinian& Wired, good advice on the CPU, I'll see if I can do that. The laptop I'm looking at has the 4720, but the 4800 with a 970m may be a better combo than the 4720 and 980m. Tough decisions.
