The Mechas as we know and love them have 2 problems, a large siluete on the modern battlefield and the inherent instability of having the center of balance higher up, not to mention so many moving parts needed to articulate human like movement , and all this added to the fact that we do not have light weight materials tough enough to support such a large construction.

The future of mechs is in no daught in my mind a slightly bigger human battle suit , like the elemental and possibly a slightly larger one for carrying supplies and bigger guns.

To make a large mech you would need a very good reason for it , something like there is a power source that needs to operate a distance from the ground and it's size exponetially increases the power output , in that case a higher than longer design is a natural choice unless you can make a manuverable cube or box, like a mobile fortress, and the reason to make them in the first place is the extra power they have in comaparison to common tanks for energy weapons, guess we'd need those first X).
They might articulated have legs for crossing various terrain, but they would primeraly move on wheels or tracks like those nightmare frames from code geass. The arms would be articulated but probably not to the human extent , as a high design might fall over it would need them to get back up, it could use a diretional full material shield for it's self, it could perform some logistic jobs if needed, as tanks sometimes pull other hardware if they get stuck and yes it could mount a weapon or two there too but probably a light one as the heavier the arms the less maneverable and slower they become.

Speaking of slightly bigger human battle suit.

Keiji Kiriya and Rita Vratatski + Power suits

All You Need Is Kill is the SF Light Novel (you can call it a Graphic Novel Manga) that inspired the movie Edge of Tomorrow.
