That anime should stay in the eternal purgatory of anime hell. Well maybe that's an overkill, but as far as I'm concerned Free! is practically porn for women.

I've been re-watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya lately. I call it mother of all modern animes because it has about everything a good anime should. Instant classic.

The Irregular at Magic High School. Is without a doubt my favourite at the moment.

mind you I own over 600 anime series so if you want a list - its probably going to get a little long.

I would comment on some of my favorites - but I am pretty sure they would get me shot. :P

Having said that - what little Ghost in the Shell and Appleseed I have seen has been awesome.
(As already noted by quite a few people )

Most of the rest of my list I shall leave unsaid (in public)

This has to be one of the best anime in 2014-2015 and remains ongoing. You will probably won't see anime in the same light again.

Shirabako is an anime about making anime --- the behind the scenes in making one, the crazy, creative, hectic, anxious, political, nerve wracking and social process behind one.

While Free may not be my cup-of-tea, considering how much fanservice is directed toward men (or, perhaps more accurately, heterosexual men, homosexual women, and bisexuals of both sexes), there is little need to begrudge a show designed to service female fans (or, perhaps more accurately, heterosexual women, homosexual men, and and bisexuals of both sexes) for doing exactly that, yes?

I don't seem to recall there being any mecha in Haruhi, so it is lacking in that department... :P
In spite of that, I would agree with you as far as Haruhi having MOST of the things a good anime should have. ;)

I agree with everything you say, but know that I'm equally disgusted by fan-service animes that are directed to hetero-men, especially those that pretend they have a plot and story and such. The only fan-service anime I "liked" was Kiss x Sis, and it was because it was created with self-awareness and blatantly rub its face against the border between anime and pornography (and perhaps most importantly, all female characters have perfectly normal proportions!!). It creeps me the f*** out when they use exactly the same mold, and simply switch the gender of the characters, replacing boobs with six-packs.

Besides, Free was produced by Kyoto Animation, the equivalence of EA in anime industry! Did you see the production quality? It was f***ing perfect! And it was so successful it even received a season 2! I guess that's one of the reasons I quit anime. Yes Kyoto has a long line-up of good old animes including Suzumiya Haruhi, but if that's the direction they're steering (I ain't blaming them), then anime is not for me.

EDIT: The thing about Suzumiya Haruhi is, she's such a charmingly self-centered character, and the character herself serves no purpose in the plot other than being f***ing amazing (occasional fan service do exist, but just for the spice, not as the point). I'd say that series set the bar for strong female characters in the industry.

EDIT 2: yes, you can probably tell that I was an anime fan. Once.

EDIT 3: and listen to the opening song. Appreciate how solid and complex the production is.

Gundam 00.

I don't care how it compares to the other Gundam series, it'll always be my favorite.

Kyoto Animation, also referred to as Kyo-Ani, made both Haruhi Suzumiya, Free! and Free! Summer. But they are probably even more famous for:

And

And these were also very popular

And I really love this, which is their most recent. Terami and Macaron are my favorites.

Probably the best Kyoani production of all.

Probably the truest truth of all times. And it didn't sell even a fraction of their "AAA" works like K-on! or Free!, not even a fraction of Suzumiya Haruhi series so any follow-up is a huge NOEP. I f***ing loved Nichijou. Damn that hurts.

Did I already post here? I'm not sure.

Gundam 00 - I don't care what other Gundam fans say about it, it's my favorite Gundam anime and it's staying that way! Interesting characters, unique Gundam designs and I like the story.

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood - The original FMA seemed average to me but HOLY HELL... Brotherhood is as good as anime gets. Which is to say it was really, really damn good.

Soul Eater - My girlfriend got me into anime with this one. Great fight scenes and funny as hell.

Kill La Kill - FOR THE STORY AND ACTION... Not the mostly naked swordfighting. But that was nice too.

Robotech - The first anime DVD I ever owned, after playing the Robotech: Battlecry game got me interested. If you like older mecha anime you should definitely watch it.

You got to be living under a rock not to miss the most badass anime of 2013. Since then it also has been the most memed. The much awaited second season is due in 2016.

This was probably the most badass anime of 2014. It could almost make you forget about the one in 2013.

Tokyo Ghoul

This though, I personally think is the BEST anime of 2013 and 2014.

Psycho Pass

I personally can't stand Naruto and Bleach, and One Piece is too quirky, but if there is one shounen anime I watch every week, it's this.

Fairy Tail
