Finally got round to trying out my Thunderbolt 5S and tested my first build. I've gone for a more 'generalist' build and a larger engine (XL 315) for mobility.

I could swap the LRM15 for another SRM6 for more brawling. Heat can be a problem! But really enjoying this mech so far. Still leveling at the moment. I have recorded some footage while broadcasting on twitch trying out this build. Somehow I managed to do over 1100 damage.

The TDR-5S seems to be less popular than the other Thunderbolt chasis. Which other builds for the 5S do you recommend?

I've made a similar build, but more LRM focused - TDR-5S
Trying to get the best use of these missile hardpoints and make it different from other thuds.

Personally I think the TDR can have either an XL or missiles but not both. The giant trashcan missile pod is so easy to hit that it severely limits your survivability, unless you are happy playing support (I wouldn't suggest SRMs). The TDR with a standard and no missiles is a goddam beast of a tank. If you can keep your trio of MLs alive you'll do great.

That said, your build with the missiles replaced by a pair of AC 5s is close to my favorite XL TDR. If you want missiles, you'd be surprised what you can get away with mounting a STD 300.

TDR FTW!

I'm running mine with a LargeLas in the right arm, triple MedLas in the LT, BAP in the CT (if I'm doomed to lose at least one side torso a match I may as well be able to make things bothersome for lone ECM mechs while I'm at it), and an LRM-20 in the RT (the upside of the trashcan missile pod is that it has the tubes to fire everything in one throw, unlike cLRMs and some IS mechs). The last few tons I've shuffled around trying out a NARC, SRM-6, AMS and whatever else comes to mind and while they all have their merits I'm still not settled on what do do with it. Its not my worst build, but its not my most lethal one either and I feel like I'm not making as much use of the chassis as I could be. Sure I can hop into it and get my usual 300-ish damage and 100k c-bills per match, but I can't shake the feeling that I'm just not getting as much out of it as I could be. I don't want to give up on it just yet, but the Liao faction sale is ending soon and the Cataphract IS a proven heavy chassis that I'm wanting to master anyway....

EDIT: Sold it for the Cataphract-2X and I have zero regrets, sorry -5S fans.

I'm running this LL boat: TDR-5S
Pretty fun. Firing those triple LL at ~600m and finishing off with the right arm LL works quite well. Just remember to watch the map and keep your distance. I would advise not to chain those 3xLL since you can easily take a few shots of 3xLL with ghost heat without overheating, and minimize your exposure to enemy fire.

How well has that build worked for you?

I love it! Very fast and agile. Great damage output with long-range, instant-hit lasers and high fire rate. The long range allows me to hide and cool off when I start overheating. Can start chaining the LL's when brawling, to keep the heat down, though you really should use those ~82KPH to keep your distance. Love it more than my Stalker-4N with its 6 LL, thanks to much higher speed and maneuverability.
If you have a good aim, this is certainly a great option.

I'm currently running this build with my 5s TDR-5s I'm still running this build through its paces. Before this I had great success with a build similar to this Old Build
