Anyone here used to play on Gamestorm or AOL? They charged $1/hr on AOL and Gamestorm came out with a sweet deal for only $9.95 a month you could play so many awesome games.

Battletech: Solaris was one of my favorites. The legend across there before they started adding everything was MECHGONEBAD. He taught me how to link my weapons so when I fired with one shot I would destroy any mech.

Not many people knew how to do that hehe! It was awesome and then they started adding new mechs. Eventually the Atlas mech became outdated and you had to play with the new mechs to compete which sucked. I loved my Atlas :).

From Genie to AOL to Gamestorm to EA to nothing. Been through the entire storm. Will never forget black monday, it almost seems like yesterday. Many a Gencon, where I got to make personal friends in the dev dept. And to boot, ate dinner and spoke at great length about...whatever, with Kelton Flinn [R.I.P]
Been around I have....and here is a possible new chapter, Scorps Represent! For the Prince!

Yep I was there. Was actually a SCISOP for Gamestorm for a couple years (MPBT Crusader). Was a sweet deal, 10 hrs a week and they comped the Gamestorm fee :o

Yeah I ran up a hefty bill on my AOL account. Then Gamestorm came along thankfully.

Heard a alot about the AOL days when I signed up for Gamestorm. Played for a lot while in tech school, but once I got stationed on a ship couldn't play anymore as back then really didn't have a connection available. Was something like Major Wraith <GDL>. Really look forward to playing MWO.

I think my GEnie bill was around $400 a month for the first few months, some how I forced myself to get it down to about $120. Imagine my dismay when I found out a lot of the old timers were using a money cheat! Cost me thousands of dollars to build up 400 million C-bills, and they could dupe it out in one mission all those years. For shame! You know who you are :P

LOL.. i was barely 13-14y/o when play'n the A-oh-Hell Solaris... MAN I LOVED THAT... however, living with my grandmother--BobBagels and other older Scorpions might remember the story--and barely have'n 14.4kps dial-up..which was expensive for the day. I think i pulled in a near $200-$300 bill... was fored offline for nearly 4 months because of it. and a LOT of farm labor to pay it back... that is.. the labor beyond the natural farm chores i had when helping my uncle with the cattle... and sadly.. that happend more than one occassion. I'll never forget those days.

**edit: Also played the GameStorm:Solaris.. and eventually caught a few months of 3025.

AHHAHAHA same thing happened to me - except I was dialing up to a server out of my town and racking up toll charges too - ended up with like a $1200 bill. My mom flipped out and I wasn't allowed to use the computer for like a year.

(shudders at credit card burn out)
I beta'd AOL before and after they went flat rate. During that time I had to keep track of my usage credit time so as not to go over and get charged.

As for the Atlas, poor thing. Banshee, one of many assaults, usually took care of it, followed by Cyclop, Stalker. Then to tick off an Atlas pilot even more, take it down with a heavy, medium and a light, especially a light. :)

In the Solaris venue, range weapons were used quite effectively and many pilots did not always kill a mech outright but simply picked it apart, either by stripping the LR weapons, or legging it to slow it down first then stripping the weapons, all the while back peddling and torso twisting to spread the damage and protect vital components. Light vs Light is the only engagement that became a brawl at the onset, except for those with the LRM locusts or panthers :o.

I am no knowledge of how unit movement was conducted in the MW leagues but MPBT saw high usage of unit formations and instructions (less as the unit and the pilots within it gain experience).

Never had AOL in that era. There was a local ISP that let you get an hour a day of free internet, then you had to pay more.

We discovered you could glitch the application they used and have infinite internet. All it took was timing it just right near the end of your hour. It was great.

I was in the beta for Multiplayer Battletech 3025 myself. I had just worked myself up to a medium mech and bam it was over.

Looking forward to mechwarrior online hope it works on my system since I have got inot beta yet probley will have to wait on the founder elite pack, I have been burned to many time buying games that i had the recommend setting for and the game not running or running really crappy. I really want to get founder elite $60 pack but without having tested the game and make sure it will run on my system will have to wait till it comes out free to play, not what I want to but it not like there money back if it runs crappy. Maybe they will release info that might make me change my mine.
