Smurfy is your best way of designing builds, and experimenting without using your funds, or C-Bills.

As for customizing them in general in game. You have to purchase the mechs with either C-Bills (in-game currency), or MC (real money), then you can customize a mech as much as you want.

Also, not many people know this, but if you happen to be part of the Windows Phone ecosystem there is an amazing app called Mechwerks that in my humble opinion is THE best mechlab... especially since you can use it anywhere. Theorycrafting builds during work is highly encouraged ;)

Nope, prices are either/or. Common question. Should be added to a FAQ.

The Mechlab was, for me anyway, the hardest thing to learn. For a newbie to face that task without the help of in-game friends is a frustrating ordeal. The OP should keep in mind that you can save your build at anytime, complete or not and you can clear all the unsaved changes by simply backing out and not saving anything. I think it turns many new players away, but I don't have any ideas on simplification either.

The UI is kind of...eh. You get used to it, though I seem to recall liking the old one better. Less counter-intuitive.

except for Hero and Champion Mechs,
Heroes have a custom paint scheme and diferant set of hardpoints to other varients of that chassis and a cbill boost, they are not usualy superior to other varients just dferant.
Champion chassis are identical to one of the cbill varients (and treeted as the same Mech for XP purposes) but come upgraded with an acceptable loadout so they save you time, they also get more XP than regular varients. you can build an identical Mech for cbills just without the XP boost
