Such is the way of such things. Typically the people that these kind of write ups helps the most are the people who have had some sort of epiphany about playing to win, and then seek out more information. Or those who know how to win at other games, but are new to the game in question. Scrubs either won't read it, or scoff at sound advice.

Generally focused fire on the weakest opponent in the lance is the opposite of what you want to do
Thats debateable, if your lance can hit up a light mech all at the same time you may have the combined firepower to take him out right then, before he even has a chance to fire off a shot.

Killing the weakest first isn't a bad idea per se, but it seems to work out less in mechwarrior than in other games. If you're in an Atlas and waste a big alpha strike on a scout and miss (or even hit but the scout disengages behind a hill to lick his wounds and come back while your back is turned) and their Atlas alpha strikes you, suddenly you're closer to either being dead or having one of your major weapon systems gone/etc. and at a serious disadvantage.
definitely agree with focus fire in general though. It actually makes sense, particularly if you have some autocannons, to focus on the the guy with the heaviest throw weight (weight of weapons) - if you and your lancemates rain enough ordinance into the big guy to keep him rocking, he'll be less able to aim his heavy weapons against your team.
There are also times in the more intense group firefights that it makes sense to move onto the next enemy in a group before finishing off an enemy that has been defanged (all or almost all weapons destroyed)

Going for the weeker mech may not always be prudent comanders may use the old bait and switch ploy if they see your useing that tactic however the point i am trying to make is not of "flaws" in his plan but to simply state he has a plan and thats a good start.
Early on sadly 80% of the pugs you join up with will not have any kind of plan other then to throw them selfs at the enemy. Once a "battle rhythm" starts to take hold of the game and players get more time under there belts you will see alot more planing and setting up of choke points and ambush spots on maps most players will just fall in to line save for the few who always just seem to run head long in to the enemy lines do there death.
