If you are looking to get a feel for the game though and learn the controls (can be adjusted), go acquire Mech Warrior 4 - Vengence, Black Knight (expansion), and Mercanaries.
These'll give you an idea as to just what you'll be walking into before Mech Warrior Online comes out

Well young tourist wishing to become a Mechwarrior you start with Battletech book one (Decision At Thunder Rift) then you read the other 100+ novels to get you into the right frame of mind. Than you read the PGI Rules and Regulations for game and forum to know clearly how to march in the PGI Universe. Note - PGI Universe has little in common with the known battletech universe. Then you secure a whole lotta Mech Credits and purchase at least one Golden Battlemech, especially if you are Clan because nothing says spartan to a clanner like a Shinny Golden Battlemech. And piloting such a Mech will gain you praise and respect throughout the MW community, Not to mention make PGI smile from ear to ear all the way to the bank. Then, the rest will just happen over time and thousands of combat drops. You will then no longer be a tourist but a born again Mechwarrior feared throughout the Inner-Sphere. Until That Day!
