Also i heard this game doesn't use 4 cores. Would it make sense to disable 2 or 3 cores on an i2700k allowing a higher overclock?

Dual cores run quite poorly in MWO compared to equivalent quads. So I don't think that route will lead to any significant performance gains.

You did not do what he said, though. Go in the AMD control panel (not the Intel one) and make sure the MWO profile is set to use the 7970M, not the Intel HD4000.

The 7970M should be running this game on High settings, easily.

I think he may have actually, I seem to remember you setting the program's "peformance level" to choose which GPU it uses

Hey guys, I figured out what I was doing wrong. I had gone to my switchable graphics card and put the mwo.exe on the list on high performance, but I had forgot to hit apply. lol

This might help for anybody using a gaming laptop or has a system with swichable graphics cards. Mine had a Radeon graphics card installed.

To summarize, what I did was right click the desktop, configurable switchable graphics, browse for the mwo.exe, switch the setting for it to "High Performance" hit apply, exit, right-click desktop again, graphics properties, 3D Application settings, set all sliders to prioritize performance.

I went from running at 15 fps to 50 fps in game. I'm going to play around with some settings, but that's basically what helped me.

Glad to hear you figured it out!

I just wanted to chime in here... the game indeed has some serious issues with DX11 and the 64-bit client. I encountered random crashes to desktop, like 1/10 matches, dropped framerates on maps like River City, and low performance with steam and smoke effects being rendered close to the cockpit.

Turning DX9 on instead alleviated all these issues, and I haven't had a crash in weeks. DX11 started to be buggy around CW release, even in pug drops. I didn't have trouble until then.

My rig:

7950 Boost with 3GB VRAM
3570K @ 4.4ghz
8GB RAM
3x1TB RAID5 + 128GB solid state

You are running a laptop to play the game. More than likely you machine is overheating. Check your cooling fan to see if its running properly and is free of dust. Open up your laptop and check it again for dust. Hell buy a can of canned air and blow it through your laptop right now.

Depending on the age of your laptop it could also be reaching end of life.

I've been trying to get Mechwarrior online to work on my laptop for a while now and only get around 4-12 fps in game. Needless to say, its impossible to play, even on the lowest settings. I even checked my specs on MWO on http://www.systemrequirementslab.com and I meet even the recommended settings. Please help me! I really want to play this game again.

Disabling my ESET antivirus does nothing to help fps. Also checked task manager and no other heavy duty tasks are running. I have no idea what is going on!

Thanks, man. That suggestion you had improved my fps to about 16fps in an actual match. All I had to do was to go to my switchable graphics card settings and set MWO to the "High Performance" setting. If only I can squeeze out 10 more fps I should be able to play this game and not suck.

If anybody else has some tips or tricks to improve fps, keep em coming. I'm a bit hesitant to root around in the user.cfg files, but I'm open to any minor tweaks that would survive patches.
Glad to here you've had some improvement.

I'd still reccomend checking out my thread on the subject, to eke out the best experience you can:
What To Do If You Have Framerate Issues / A Lower Spec Pc
You said you didn't want to mess with the user.cfg but it's the single best weapon you have in your arsenal, and if you only do what it says in my thread, can't hurt the game.

You might have to throw caution to the wind and try some user.cfg tweaking.

My machine used to average 15fps or so on lowest settings, and I managed to get it to around 20-25 with tweaking. That thread is a behemoth, and user.cfg options don't always work after patches, but you've got nothing to lose.
That threads original post is 10 and 26 months out of date.

A lot of it either doesn't work or isn't needed.

I think they fired the optimization guy over at PGI after he said Paul looked funny in a pink shirt.

The game lags because PGI are completely incompetent programmers. From my observations their team consist completely of (admitted good) artist.

The game is not optimized in the slightest.

I can run most new games on high and can run BF3, FC3, Witcher 2, and many other far better looking games without issue but MWO constantly drops frames and barely runs beyond 30 fps on average.

I agree with this comment they didn't even make the game engine they used one from another game that has the same problems as it did when they made cyrsis you can make it look really good but that game engine has a lot of lag issues. I can play games that look a lot better then this game at 60fps + easy but when it comes to MWO all you can hope for no matter what is 30 fps. It has been like this for a long time and don't except to see it get better or change any time soon.

On decent hardware, you can happily run 50-60+ at High if you optimise it as per my thread.

I was running 25-30 at low/med on old hardware for ages, and now I run 50-60 at high/very high on some slightly newer gear.

Without the stuff I put in place, originally from lower spec stuff, this new PC would only hit 25-35 on medium settings, and about 6-10 at max.

Yes, it is incredibly poorly optimised, but there's still things we can do to improve it.
