Is it only me or is BT getting more and more insane?

It's kind of ridiculous and imo breaks immersion even when reading a novel. Mechs are big lumbering beasts. Even a light is at a minumum 25 tons. That's a lot of mass, it doesn't turn on a dime or accelerate like a Top Fuel. 425 kph? Okay if they say that while at top speed it has a kilometer and a half turning radius and takes 20 seconds to bring to full stop.

Light weight range is 20 to 35 tons

The most unbelievable part of that is that Mech races became popular on Solairis 7. Who wants to watch track when you can watch MMO?

And how many maps would you need to play this piece of junk properly?

It seems to be a land based naval gauss, dealing 80 points of ramming damage on a straight run hit ;)

All the tech and stuff after the Civil War Era just got stupid imho...

The MASC Locust could clock in at over 320 Kph. I don't remember playing on a board that it couldn't clear in one turn.

Wow.

Just wow, I always have a hard time getting full use out of a Firemoth at 21 hexes with MASC, how would you use a 32 hex Locust?

As for that Fireball, you'll have to hit it with artiliery, and just saturate the board with it, and hope you hit it.

a few well placed Thunder LRMs will do the job on the 7 points of leg armor...

I can see this thing hauling butt down the central street of a city....

Suddenly, a Hunchback steps around the corner and sticks out a leg...

Firemoth contacts leg and trips, then proceeds to skid down the remainder of the street scraping away all armor and most of its internal structure.

The Hunchback loses the leg, but hops away waving a little flag that says "Pwnd!!"

Don't forget that the mech won't stop with just skidding. It's probably gonna smack right through the front side of a building or two, before collapsing them on itself.

so after failing the piloting roll for skidding he only needs 30 hexes of street to grind away all of it's armor (including the 2 points for falling, excluding hitting buildings and alike) ;)

still I think a 10/15 light is the maximum of speed you usually need
everything more just reduces the mechs combat efficiency completely

the scarabus is a good fighting light with speed imho

The faster mechs do require larger playing areas to use efectively

Whats the issue? Battlemechs are not slow lumbering beasts they are often thought as. In the novels you do run into more acrobatic performances, and no I am not talking about some random DA book, you will find them as well in the earlier B-tech books (you know the ones set in the 3020s...).

Heck per the rules that Fireball can reach a speed of 51 hexes (Sprinting, MASC, Supercharger, Sat nav up-link and a pilot with the speed demon ability), thats some 550kph.

This 'Mech is built purely to abuse the skidding and to-hit movement modifiers. Otherwise, it is all but combat ineffective as anything other than a 'Mech scale cannonball. If it has to actually run during a race it will eventually fail a PSR or if you play it according to the fluff, collide with a civilian vehicle at which point it will fall, skid, and hit A: yet more vehicles or B: hit a building. The whole point of this is to not fail a PSR while being shot at, dodging traffic and running on pavement.

I would love to see someone roll a successful DFA against this with an Urbanmech.

Um. To second Nebfer, BattleMechs aren't "lumbering beasts." In strictly hardware terms, they are actually quite capable machines. No, they aren't capable of the jumpy-flipping-bounce off the walls stuff; but they aren't stiff-limbed shuffling turrets on legs either. They can - WITH A GOOD PILOT! - bob, weave, duck, sidestep, etc. The very best mech pilots can and do engage in mech-scale sports, for example. Just not mech-scale gymnastics.

As for their accel/decel rates; we don't have those in hard terms, but we DO know that they CAN turn at max speed inside of 30 meters; they can stop from max speed in 30 meters, and they can get to max speed in ten seconds (or maybe a bit less). Of course, "slick" terrain obviously complicates these maneuvers.

As for "real world physics" & etc - um ... BT isn't a physics simulator. It never has been. It's about space-opera with constant warfare and very little real peace, combat mostly carried out by giant stompy-robots with psuedo-knights (or mongols, in the case of the clans) piloting them; all set in the seed-bed of the collapse of ancient Rome.
