Thoughts on what the community could achieve if it was given the tools to create own maps?
Just think about it, most of the old beloved games had one thing in common: map editors or modding tools available to create community material such as maps. CS, Warcraft, starcraft, the elder scrolls, fallout etc all these old games survived for so long thanks to the modding community.

I read somewhere that it costs a lot of money (10k+) to create every new map, so wouldn't a map editor relieve the company from the financial stress of creating new maps?

The map issue has been debated for a long time. Part of the issue is that pgi is worried about quality, also if they may be required to pay the map maker. Also, there are done legal issues. A while back there was a poll about what the community wants. Essentially the community decided that that wanted pgi to finish certain features and their own set of planned maps before releasing a tool kit. Even then, the user generated map idea would be subject to pgi review. All signs however point to the fact that now that the main art asset kit for map development is done we will see 1-2 maps every quarter, a pretty good pace.

Steam workshop moderation would render this not much of a problem

PGI can't do that. Don't ask me why.

Well I'd be more worried for PGI about stolen textures, etc. being used on maps, then being released by PGI. That's where user-hosted servers would be nice. Go ahead and use textures/porn/whatever, its not coming from PGI so they're not culpable.

Are they afraid to be outshined by the community?

All maps up to now made by PGI are very poor quality. The design is bad. Atmosfere is great though!

People want bigger maps, however i am not very excited about it. Time will learn i guess, hopefully PGI learns from each map.

Man. You still can't destroy a tree. Year of 2015.
Remember how you was a forest devastator in MW4, some years before.
And MW4 is a bad game though.

DO I want it? Yes.
CAN we have it? Probably not.

The thing is, that I want to see some super awesome maps, and even attempt my own map creating even though I would be a complete novice. I mean really, you can't say that it would be really expensive to do and maintain, because you just update the editor every time the main client is updated. And it's not like they couldn't review a few maps every week or month. While I admire a lot of what PGI has done lately, I feel like they are either being lazy, or don't want to lose control.

Why? How are they themselves creating maps if not through some form of editor?

Ok... The thing I try to bring to you is... This mission is impossible.
PGI has lot's of unfinished business with MWO before they have any idea of creating public SDK.
Read forums. People ask and wait so long of about simple things.
Watch into a game client. Just launch it. Almost everything done BAD!
This GUI 2.0 is just a crap. Ok, it is a nice snipped for an internet shop maybe, but NOT for a Mechlab.
And most surprising that the game store is worse than a Mechlab.

Asking them to bring you a map editor is like to ask a monkey to develop AK-47 for you.

The maps MWO uses can be and are created in the CE3 SDK. Anyone can DL and start using right now. So technically we have the editor and can create maps now. Just need some numbers on a few things and protocols on how they set up the caps etc so the maps meet the specs the game requires.

Ok I think I understand now.

But from what I read, the developers read the forums and listened to player feedback? After all, a f2p must keep the playerbase interested in further purchases to stay afloat. I for one would love to see what this passionate community could produce in a few months time.
Almost every game I've played with an open map editor has always had the biggest and most thriving communities. Like counter strike, or warcraft/starcraft series almost legendary editor who brought games like dota.

With an editor at hand, the game becomes more of a game adapted to the community, spearheaded by community members.

The big difference here is that mwo had no private servers. When mwo goes to steam this may get on the radar. For now I think it's out of the realm of possibility.
