I'm in Kansas and never see the kind of vulgarities the OP experienced. Perhaps I'm too ignorant to notice?
I rarely see anyone curse in chat. I see some complaining about maps (esp. the Bog and Mordor) and teams sucking, but never all out curse-fests or taunting. Perhaps I'm in ELO Heaven huh? LOL. Can't wait for VOIP!

Not only will you be surprised by what will inevitably be filtered (if trying to cover jargon for many languages) you still cannot filter sentiment.
[Your team is "special". You are "special". I wish I could play with only 30 damage and feel good about myself. Welcome to MWO, you are obviously new.] And so on.
As one who served in his nation's armed forces, I tend to laugh at people getting offended by dialogue. Especially words.

And on and on in the same vein, just a bunch of foul-mouthed junior high school epithets that I don’t want or need to read, much less my kids or grand-kids, who regularly watch me play when I do, albeit it less and less.
Instant disconnection. I can take good-natured ribbing, even in foreign languages, but the trash that was scrolling tonight from these kiddies was just too much to take and never happens in German or Russian. I guess those guys are just better mannered. Unbelievable that PGI hasn’t built in a “foul” filter for uncouth Americans in the chat.
Then again, unbelievable that PGI hasn’t done a lot of things that are simply expected of games since, oh, fifteen years ago. What a travesty. Total fail, PGI, total freaking fail. Will not spend, ever, while this crap exists.

A little trash talk is sweet I reckon, but if it continues game after game toward the same players (bullying), screen shots should be taken and reported to support. I have never witnessed constant abuse or bullying on MWO, generally the player base is friendly and hilarious!

Also you act like only Americans are ******** on the internet. Guess what, I've seen Russians say things that would make you blush. Your post doesn't need discrimination in it

People will always be jerks on the internet, there's a reason I mute almost every game I play online. That's about all you can do.

On a second thought, if your kids and grandkids are around you, get off the computer! play with them instead of us! Seriously...

I have over 10,000 drops up to this point and I have never witnessed anything close to this.

Sometimes one doesn't get the chance to play at all without kids running around. My kids certainly prefer a relaxed dad who shoots some mechs sometimes over a craving dad looking wistfully at his computer all the time.
On second thought: I don't let my kids get close to the monitor, so they couldn't read it anyway.

But.
If you're going to be offended by what some halfwit spews into a chat box then go ahead and be offended - no one cares that you're offended. You haven't been physically hurt and this most likely isn't repeated harassment aimed at solely at you.
If it really bothers you that much or you've got kids watching just turn chat off.
For reference:

First signs of mech addiction?
But to be true, it depends on the age of the kids. My big girl is 4 now and yes she likes to see when I'm playing, too. Normally that happens only when she's asleep and I play some rounds in midday break and she wakes up.
All I do is play that one round to the end and then the PC goes dark. Maybe, I go to training grounds with her from time to time, but not into real matches.
First, this game is not for little kids. Second, time with my kids is precious, more precious than time with you guys
And older children around 12-14 play for themselves so daddy can take his 1 hour off.

It's as easy as String.replace("curseword", "*********");
I'm sure there's an open source list of all the words and permutations that you'd likely want to block. Heck, you could just use the same list that the forum has (even if it's overly zealous sometimes)

4 year old eldest more precious than game? Check.
Only playing when kids asleep? Check.
Game nothing for little kids? Check.
So, same here, actually. With the additional bonus for me that mine won't be able to read chat for the years to come as we are German. Now if they could only get old enough to actually play with me ...

What we find offensive seems ridiculous when the top movie in the US celebrates a psychopath killer who see's the people in the country he occupies as savages. Men, women and children killed by the hundreds.
Nothing to be proud about being normal in a profoundly sick society.
(Side note:. I am Combat disabled Vet in the same conflict zone, I just woke up.)
