Hello Mechwarriors,

In the old Battletech system, critical hits were a part of the game. You could roll double ones and then if you rolled an 8 or higher on 2d6, you could have all the way up to 3 crit locations. I would imagine that there are critical hits in the game too but I don't know how they work. I know that once you had your armor removed and started to take internal structure damage, each hit had a chance to crit until that area blew off. I have had weapons blown off though before losing that structure so it would seem to make sense the game does keep track of them as well.

However, there has been a few times in a game where my armor is good and then suddenly, *POOF*!, I'm dead. I even took a screen shot of my poor Raven only having been hit once with a medium pulse laser and dying. Usually, I have always seen it say, "Your Engine is Destroyed" but sometimes it does say ammo explosion too. Now in the P&P version, you needed 3 engine hits or 2 gyro hits to go down but is that true for MWO? I've never seen a Gyro destroyed end screen so I have been wondering if that's possible in game?

Now, I've always counted it as bad luck for me but tonight, with only a single blast from my duel Gauss Rifles, I killed a Timber Wolf Prime. Nothing else hit it except for me in the first 1 1/2 minutes of finding each other on the map. It just seems unrealistic that with one crit that I'm doing triple engine hits. In P&P, you started to screw with your heat scale and run hot (and if you only had 10 single heat sinks and had 2 engine hits, you were going to blow yourself up eventually with the next 3 or 4 shots you took). But with the way the heat scale works in game, did they just take out needing 3 engine hits and just made it 1? I am curious to know. Does anyone have any proof of how crits work in this game?

Thanks guys and gals.

Edit; Oh, I did just want to add one more thing. I'm pretty sure that I didn't hit his cockpit. I watch my head shot counts in my achievements and I didn't see it go up. Plus, I was a little under 800 meters and if I hit the cockpit from that distance, I want a stuffed bear prize... ;)

totally possible that a thunderwub hit you with 7 Medium pulse lasers in one of your side torsos and killed you with that (if you have an XL engine). Or a shot in the back, you don't survive that.

Gettin instakilled in light mechs is normal these days, sad but true. That has nothing to do with crit hits, those work only on items, not the engine, as kyrdragon said.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong but I believe for the moment crits only affect weapons and ammo...

I do know there's been numerous Dev comments to the effect that they would like to expand crits to effect things on a far more granular scale.

Crits work on engines, it just has no effect. Most items have 10 HP, and most weapons have a 42% crit chance, or 52% for MGs and 67% for Flamers and LBx cannons.

DoT weapons deal crit damage in tiny segments, whatever the tick rate is.

Gyro is part of the engine in MWO, so there is no way to actually crit it.
While engine crits won't directly kill your target, 15% of crit damage does go back into the InternalStructure. As such, an AC20 can deal 29 damage, and dual Gauss can one shot a cockpit, even if fully armoured.

Nope. I did have an XL engine but it was in the front CT that had 36 points of armor before internal structure.
