Anyone starting to feel this way that only laser weapons really matter and that anything else is fairly useless?

Like a laser anything can dish out enough damage to negate any other weapon type for the most part.

has it always been this way it is just seems worse now or I am in a ELO range where non-optimal builds just do not work at all?

Correct. Lasers promote brawling and the other weapons promoted tactical thinking at long range and they seemed OP to the non-tactical thinking players so they were nerfed. Now the tactical thinking players are using lasers and brawling and time to kill is mere seconds. Like 4 seconds usually. 7-10 for the hundred ton targets. Actually you can get 2 kills in 4 seconds sometimes. Maybe LRMs, PPC, and Gauss were not OP?

They've been steadily pushing us away from PPCs and towards lasers for better part of 2 years.

*walks into the open, stands there, in front of whole enemy team, dies in 4 seconds*

TTK IS TOO LOW, LASERS OP

Good damage, instant hit, low tonnage, more versatile. Oh and it looks cool.

Your timber laser vomit with 5 mediums 2 large pulse will 13.6 damage at 400 meters in 250 milliseconds which is the average human reaction time. So by the time you register being hit and start twisting to spread damage you'll get hit with 30 or so damage or more. It can be just as affective as ppfld but its hot

No,

IS ac's are very well working weapons, clan AC's are a bid nosnense.

Gauss is a great weapon. if you cna put 2 on a mehc, otherwise a single one is not that great.

srms and streaks,a re too much spreaddamge to work reliable on bigger mechs, yet good for hunting lights.

And so lasers are one of the most used wepaons, because: they are available for all ranges, ammo indpendend. and sine every mech can simply have DHS upgrades its nothing to think about if you should use DHS or not.

Further with a massive heattreshold of a skilled mech beginning mostly at 50 (or maybe 45 for some lights) There is a massive amount of open heat ressource to spam a lot enerygweapons.

SRMs are actually still pretty good, at least on mediums and lights - they give huge damage for the crits/tonnage. Some heavies and assaults can use them too, like the Catapult-A1 and Atlas-S.

That's cause the heat cap is too high. We can boat a ton of lasers and out damage the tonnage trade off that ballistics have.

This is all due to convergence. Something we have campaigned for them to fix since July of 2012 and they still haven't done anything at all to address it.

True ... but I would really like to hear PGIs side of the convergence "debate" since they haven't said anything at all on it, ever, as far as I know. If I had to guess, I would say there are some technical issues that are an obstacle to efficient implementation ... but who knows.

I would actually really appreciate a couple of good dev blogs on certain design issues:
- convergence
- ECM

I don't necessarily agree with their position ... but I think having more understanding of the issues would go a long way towards acceptance of whatever their decisions are.

P.S. As for weapons ... lasers are good ... but PPCs, ACs, and pulse lasers all work well too.

Most players just park their mechs somewhere and turret-track with the mouse though, they take the full damage. Also at under 400 meters you can track the lasers reasonably well on moving targets.
