With the introduction of the new Counter attack mode I got to thinking about what it is that doesn't sit right with me about invasion mode. Counter attack is a drag out fight to retake the base. Meanwhile the invasion battle isn't.
Which is what bugs me. Invasion mode isn't an invasion or even a base capture. It's an Objective Raid. At no point do you take control of the base. you just run in and destroy the target.
Now I don't have anything against this but it would be nice if the Objective raid was labeled as such and given an more appropriate place in CW. Meanwhile we need to ahve an actual base capture that equals the fights you see in Counter attack.
Actualy taking the base would require people and not just mechs. What Iwould like to see is a base capture mode where the attackers escort troop transports up to the base and Infantry, or Elementals, Would first open the gates, which would replace the current method of opening the gates. The convoy would stop at the gate and Infantry would swarm over teh wall and enter a control center. The mechs would be required to defend this location for a set amount of time before they infantry would get the gates open.
Then you would escort them to the base itself where they would take control of it and set up the mobile field base. The attackers would be forced to defend these locations and troops while the defenders would need to fight them off. It would be a constant battle to take over the base. The infantry and APC could be destroyed but more would always drop until time runs out. You could even have multiple lines going. APC's head for each gate on the map and then converge at the base where Omega currently is.
As for what to do wiht the Objective raid. I am thinking that currently we are takign out a Naval Gauss cannon setup that is interfereing with dropships landing troops. So I am thinking a planet shoudl have a defence value in addition to the zones of control. The Higher the defence value the lower the maximum tonnage that is allowed to drop. By contrast if you complete enough Raids you can lower the defence value of the planet and thus allow larger dropships to come down.
The Objective raids can have different themes, Gauss Canon, Airfields, Repair facilities, etc. To boost the Defence of a planet back up perhaps a raid against the attackers dropships would help knock forces off the planet. Russ did say they are working on a union class dropship.

I think Star Wars: Battlefront-esque way of playing is great. You play as infantry to do certain tasks, and then hop onto vehicles (mechs in MWO) for other tasks.

I rented Battlefront 2 so many damn times from the local video store back when those actually existed. Incoming nostalgia wave detected...

Battlefront 2 is an aweomegame. I don't see us hoping out of our mechs anytime soon though.
