How do you name your mechs? Is there a madness to the method?
Do you like to name your Mechs like one would ships?
Do you use 'Technical' names?
Do you use Girls names?
I am one of the people who use a 'Technical' naming convention for all of my mechs.
(S-)X-X-X
S-: Only used when a mech is completely stock
X-: Variant Model. Ex: 2D, 4P, C1, 733C
X-:
If mech is stock: T1 to represent Tech Level 1. T2 to represent Tech Level 2
If mech is modified in any way: M
X- List of modifications to mech: (F) for Frame, (A) for Armor, (E) for Engine, (H) for Heatsinks, (W) for Weapons, (D) for defensive and Electronic systems
So lets say you have a Hunchback 4P, and you swap out the engine, convert it to Endosteel, and switch to Double rate Heatsinks.
with my convaluted system, it would be named: 4P-M-FEH.
Let hear it!

I go a bit simpler.
To minimize your time spent hunting and pecking with the awesome, intuitive UI for engines and modules, I suggest using the mech name to help identify where you might have these goodies stored.
Using this example from my own inventory, I have a couple of codes.
Q = Quirked. The Mech is predominantly built based on its quirks
NQ = Not Quirked. The mech is not built based on its quirks
M = Moduled. The mech is equipped with appropriate modules.
Mx = For specific modules I might list "Ms" for seismic. "Md" for radar derp, etc... (not shown)
PM = Partially Moduled. Mech has partial modules, usually consumables
NM = Mech has no modules equipped (not shown)
XXXx = Mech has XL engine of the specified size
XXXs = Mech has Standard engine of the specified size
This little code helps identify modules and engines and keeps you from sorting through a myriad of mechs. This can help reduce delays between drops while looking for these items.

It literally makes no difference to anything.

This is a great idea, and I wish it would work for me.
70 mechs; modules and engines get lost all the time. However, I'm a total mechlab junkie. I don't leave the same build on a mech for more than a handful of drops at best... Eventually, I'd start forgetting to rename them, and end up where I started.

I give my mechs themed names.
My thunderbolts are named by what i have them set up to do, my mplx7 tdr is named "Thunder", the erppcx3 variant is called "Lightning". My single Awesome 9m is named "Zeus" because he's a bigger version of the tdr now. My crabs are called "Giant Enemy" and "Dakkaberg". My favorite is "The D" - my Atlas d-dc.
I also have an Anasi named " 'PiderMan" because reasons.
I wish we could display the names somewhere in game!

I name my PPC mechs after things relating to particles, such as my Awesome 9M named Higgs, and my Catapult K2 called Hadron.

Each chassis gets a theme (silly/homage/both) and the names derive from that (Thunderbolts are Bon, Scott, Malcolm, Angus and Brian for members of AC/DC, Stormcrows are all named for Ian McKellan, my Atlases all reference turtles, etc.). I only keep 20-30 of my nearly 170 mechs equipped and I have a spreadsheet to keep track of that info and active builds.

I tended to follow a varmint theme for a bit ( AwesomPossum and Honey Badger) and others have names like Bandit and Misfit. My new Mist Lynx has temporarily been dubbed Drizzle Kitten until I get a feel for a good name.
