Heya fellow Mechwarriors.

I might be upgrading my computer and am thinking about getting a fairly
decent machine.

I am running with 760gtx Nvidia card now but I am wondering if I should
go with 980/970 GTX or getting another 760GTX for sli which costs alot less.

I am looking for information about if you guys found alot of diffrence after
getting another card(SLI) or if I should just get a new high end one?

And if SLI is working nicely in other games as well.

Those who added SLI did you find your Rig more noicey?

BTW. I have 4K monitor but I am running it at 2560x1440 atm. And in
Mechwarrior I am running the resolution at 1600x900 which I would like
to get up to at least 2560x1440. Even tho the lower res is clear and crispy.

What do you guys think and what would you do?

Regards,
Cow & Chicken

Make sure the power supply can handle a single or triple SLI set up.

The nvidia web sight can provide you with a comparison between card types and if i'm not mistaken they show SLI performance along side single top end cards. you might be able to get a second card just like the one you have cheep and have the same performance as a single new top end card.

If you don't need more graphics power i say keep your money.

At the moment i run 2 x 560 ti in SLI mode. it runs crysis 2 and metro last light on almost max settings 1900x1600 on a 40 inch with no issues. WIth decent frame rate those extra setting i don't miss when playing a FPS.

Also consider a solid state Hard drive as your primary drive. I boot cold to usable in about 9 seconds.

My systems about 3 years old and it still has lots of life in it yet. Technology however is rapidly changing.

Occules rift might literately be a game changer for many industry.

I have a pair of 4GB 670 GT cards. Up until recently I couldn't use msaa in sli mode or the mech hangar would flicker at me - while I was in match. now it seems to work much better - I get 90-130 FPS in 1080p. Used to get 30-40 FPS in 7680x1440 under the poorer SLI functionality, but currently my PC and I are away from my triple monitor setup so I can't test with the improved drivers.

760 is like a 670, and 2x670 are like a 690. so here is a bench comparison of the 690 to 970

http://www.anandtech...ct/1184?vs=1355

crysis 3 at 1440p shows the 690 performing better.

However, much more than 1440p you may start hitting a barrier on the 2gig memory per card.

I run 2x970 in sli, it works very well as long as you use the alternate frame rendering for mwo. I can run everything at max except particles, at about halfway between 1440p and 4k res. Can't put on AA though.

If I run at 4K i get dips down to 25 but generally sit around 50fps.

Thanks for the info guys.

Been looking for hardware passed hours and I think I lost my marbles. lol.
Here is what I am almost decided on getting.

Asus Z97-PRO GAMER MB
Intel Core i7 4790K
Inno3D GTX 980 ‘iChill Herculez X4 Air Boss Ultra’ x2 (sli)
I have now.
Coolmaster ATCs 840 which supports 2 powersupplies so I am good on power. 2x750w
Crucial 32GB kit (4x8GB) DDR3 1600MHz, CL9, PC3-12800, BallistiX Sport
Samsung UHD (4k) SAMLU28D590DS monitor
2 x Samsung Evo 840 250gb SSD and few 3tb hd's.

This must run most game fairly at 4k resolution. I am even just happy with 2560x1440 on ultra high settings.

I wouldn't go sli without you guys answering for sure. It will be fun to see how the game looks at a higher resolution!

Thanks guys for your time.

Salute,
Cow and Chicken

I would suggest drop it to 4690k if you are not content creating and it is just for games... that much ram if you plan running a ramdisk...

For sli most importantly - double check the spacing on the mobo and the GPU... you need 1 space minimum for the cards to breathe...

Aye I was trying to check on the MB. I will take another if this dosen't fit.

I play Everquest (eqemu) which I need the 32 gig for and the extra cpu power to
box my own raid! :P

And I have that memory already installed in my current computer i7-2600k sandybridge.

Kinda booting up 36 clients of EQ, (36 characters,, I know I am insane :P)

Ahh forgot to ask.

Which Z97 mb would you guys get?

I run a 2x GTX670 setup.

Personally I wouldn't recommend SLI overmuch. SLI support in general tends to lag behind in games I find, and it seems like it's more effective to just have one beefy card.

Though as far as MWO, *presently* it works just fine, though you have to disable some settings to make the mechbay stop flickering as stated above. It just took...a very long time to get SLI support.

I came from a single 760 from PNY that I overclocked the snot out of to get 60 fps on high in MWO. SOld that and got a gigabyte g1 gaming 970. Best purchase I've ever made. This may not do as well as two 760's in games optimized for sli, but they are few and far between, and MWO is certainly not.

Go for a 970. I can highly reccomend the Gigabyte G1. Quiet, fast, and overclocks like a champ. Mine got to 1.492 ghz base1.5 ghz Boost and 7200ghz on the memory, never getting about 65 C on ultra even 60-80 fps.

But, if you want 4k, go for a 980. I wont ever game at that resolution unless I have the money to make a build that can run it 40+ FPS. Seeing as i'm a college kid, I dont need to be dropping 2000+ on 1 or 2 4k monitors and upgrading to a 970 lol. Im fine with 1080p.

And one more thing. NEVER go with an off brand of video card. Only brand I trust outside of the premium aftermarket companies is PNY. I have no idea who inno3d is, but I wouldnt give them my money over gigabyte, asus, or EVGA

Yeah I got GTX 980 today! I am running everything on high settings so far at 2.5k (2560x1440)
This card is AWESOME! You guys can read about it here!

Inno3D GeForce GTX 980 "iChill Herculez X4 Air Boss Ultra" 4096MB GDDR5
http://www.kitguru.n...s-ultra-review/
http://www.overclock...rodid=GX-040-IN

They didn't have 2 so I will have to wait a week or more till my second card comes in!

Tomorrow I am getting my i7-4790k and I have to wait another week for my ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO!

After I have everything this I have a feeling this new computer will EAT Mechwarrior alive at 4K resolution
at highest settings! At least, it BETTER! lol

Congratz!

When you get sli running in mwo at 4k try and get some FPS recording using FRAPS or Afterburner. Curious to see what you can do with 2x980s!

Unfortunately, going by my 2x970s, you will get good max framerates but still get a slowdown in intense action (or looking at water - wtf?). Not sure if this is more to do with the unoptimised cpu-bound side of MWO though.... Or maybe I get to blame the 970 vram thing!
