What about this as a suggestion? Time to bring some smaller matches into CW (4v4, 6v6, 8v8, etc). How about a mode where the winner of a 4v4 grants a 12v12 a minute to see the drop decks of the opponent and what their first mech will be? Maybe or maybe not that particular idea would work, but I am thinking that we should have progressive matches that can impact the next match. Smaller matches would also allow for most of the older maps to work. Thoughts?

Firstly, I would like planetary invasion to be represented as a directed graph of actions and counteractions of both sides instead of the simple and very high-level "take or retake 15 territories" abstraction we currently have. Those actions/counteractions involve, but are not limited to, attacks, counterattacks, beachheads, skirmishes, recon, ambushes, and other game modes.
Also, it would be preferred if each planet had its own unique set of "territories" represented in those same directed graphs.
Once we have that, we can then incorporate your basic idea in "recon" and "ambush" game modes.
