In previous mechs games, self destructs sometimes included massive explosions. Similar large explosions should occur when a mech's reactor overheats.

Doesn't make sense. Feel free to read up on the guide to BattleTech technology when you get a chance, but mech's use Fusion Engines. There isn't really a condition possible to get it to go "Critical" and explode like a nuke. The old games were a bit deceptive on this, and wern't always a good representation.

Stackpole explosions would be out, both due to most of the BT universe, and the possible griefing.

However,a massive heat spike in a radius around a destroyed engine would be believable...
