What's that vertical protrusion on its back?

I'm not sure if I like how it looks. I think I don't.... And in MWO it just makes your silhoutte bigger for the enemy to shoot at.

I think the angle makes them look a bit taller than they actually are. plus its got those big arms to shield itself.

Just part of it's iconic silhouette, I don't think it had any purpose other than being extra armor to protect the head from fire from the back and bulk up the armor of the rear torso.
No jump jets in it, only one side has MASC so it can't be because of that.
It just kinda looks scary I guess, Quasimodo and the Gargoyle. Sitting in the tree.

Perhaps they were meant to be invocative of the upper portions of a gargoyle's wings (especially when said wings are in a folded or semi-folded position)?







Of course, it then makes it odd that they don't appear on the 'Mech named "Gargoyle"...

And, upon further consideration, most representations of angel & demon wings tend to work the same way, which would better fit the jump-capable Executioner's role as a representation of "an 'angel of death' descending from on-high to smite its foes" or "a 'death-dealing demon' ascending from the depths on pillars of hellfire" (or something like that).
